You need to pull motor and take it apart for rod bearings....

Cant get to the back bearings without removing the x-member, etc. Even then it will be pretty tough, at that point it's easier just to pull. I think WRXdan was able to do all but the last one from under the car, IIRC...

what douglas vincent siad, you have to split the block in two half's if your changing bearings.

go out side and open the hood and look at the motor, it splits right in half an i mean right in half.

Are you sure its a rod and not the hydraulic lifters making noise? They can start ticking real loud with alot of miles and neglect of oil changes, I just poured some seafoam in the crank case for mine when I got it and drove it like I stole it down the freeway and the lifters pumped right back up.

The 97 Outback most likely is the phase 1 2.5 which is the DOHC motor and is notorious for headgasket failures. If, and I doubt it is, one of the few that came with the 2.2 in it, then I think by then Subaru was running the single port heads on them which means less air flow and your exhaust wont bolt up. As far as the motor bolting up, yes almost all Subaru's are interchangble motors as far as the nuts and bolts go. I believe it will work but may have some wiring issues here and there.
