I think it has to be cut out. More specifically, the silicone holding it on has to be cut. I believe they make specific tools for this.

I think he just means the covering trim so he can get the rust underneath it. I've had my windshield replaced several times, a couple times at work, so I don't think they had to cut out the trim as I imagine that would mean replacing it and that doesn't seem like something they'd carry on the truck. One guy did, however, tell me he was glad they don't make these cars anymore as all the trim is a PITA. On the wagon rear trim (which looks similar), the piece is actually T-shaped, with the stem of the T sticking into the adhesive between the glass and metal. All I used to remove it was a screwdriver and 3" putty knife to work it out. Done carefully, the trim can probably be reused (mine probably can't, but the rear trim was more difficult due to the greater curvature on the ends).

The putty knife is just to keep the bend radius as large as possible so you can (hopefully) reuse the trim, but you'll probably need a screwdriver to actually pry it loose. A heat gun might make the whole thing real easy, but I was too lazy to find mine when I did it.

I bought my car and that strip was missing, luckily I found one at the junkyard, and somehow NONE of the adhsive had grabbed onto the tabs, so it pulled out really easily. Couldnt get the same luck with the rear, so I guess I just have to order one and put it in myself
