A few questions about TD04 and MBC

Post by Turbone »

I just swapped a EJ22T into my 89 RX and I'm re-using my TD04 and MBC. It wont go into positive pressure because its missing the boost pressure sensor and wastegate solenoid. I plan on getting this tonight or tomorrow, but if I'm using a MBC, are they necessary? Can they be bypassed, or do they need to be connected so the ECU see's something?

You need to have the boost pressure sensor. The wastegate solenoid you don't need. You can get an old dropping resistor from an automatic trans car and plug it into the wastegate solenoid connector (exact same connector) and it will work fine.

This is what you need

Thanks, thats great. I just pulled my old EA82T dropping resistor off
Guess I can re-install that and I will be picking up the pressure sensor.

Well, its running and boosting now. But I still have the high idle.
It might go down once the car is warmed up, but I may have to clean the IAC.
I made a stop at PIA yesterday and talked to Steve and Jake and they told me basically the same thing.
But at least I got to physically look at a turbo Legacy.
Thanks for the help Josh (here and at USMB)

Now to go put some gas in it and see how it does on the road.

Once you get the pressure senser & dropping resistor in, reset the ECU and see how things run.

As for the high idle, the IAC valve probably is not the cause. There's something else likely that's causing the high idle.....I don't recall, but has the throttle plate stops been moved?

I know the usual way to reset the ECU is to unhook the battery for about 20min, is there also a way using the test connectors?
Also, are the stops on the linkage?

N/m about the reset, I searched and found it.
Need the info on the stops tho

Yes, the stops are where the cams/linkage are on the TB.

OK thanks Josh. For some reason my car will not let me boost sometimes. It will have a constant CEL and it will Idle really wierd, and as soon as i Start to get out of vaccum into boost, it cuts out, and if I hold the throttle, it will die. If I let off, it will just go back to idling shitty. I believe it is a mix of my BCS and IAC, both codes are present. I just dont understand why it does it sometimes, and other times it runs just fine

Ok, I'll check this out today.
I really think its computer related. It has to be warmed up good when the idle seems close (1k), it will climb to 1.5k. If I shut the car off and restart, the idle changes back to the way it was before going high (which is no idle at all). I need to get the check engine light hooked up so I can read the codes.

When you experience this problem, have you checked the codes immediately? Are the BCS & IAC the only two codes present? What happens when you reset the ECU, do the codes come back right away, or does it take some time for them to come back.

Have you run the active diagnostic test with only the green connectors?

Well, I havent done squat all week as far as checking codes. I need to get under the dash and pull some wiring down and find the wire that supposed to go to the dash light, so I'm not really looking forward to it
I'll try and do it this weekend tho.
Heres a few pics...
