Replaced my TCM tonight

Post by lucid_door »

I had just put a used transmission in my '90 Legacy AWD auto a few weeks ago, and after the transplant, noticed it had a pillow soft 2-3 upshift and the power light was still blinking away on me, not to mention the torque bind my old unit of 221K had. I tried flashing codes but couldn't get a dang thing out of that little procedure to do so. Figuring it might have been a bit silly that the old trans and newer trans would have the same issues, I ordered a used TCM on Ebay for a '94 Legacy (to match the year of the trans, engine, and rear diff) and threw it in tonight. It's all better now :D Shifts are much firmer and faster, no more flashing power light, and my torque bind issue disappeared. I am thrilled my Legacy is driving like new again! I was a line tech for 10 years, and aside from the umpteen 4wd modules I have replaced in Blazers, I have never had to replace an engine or trans module to fix a problem. First time, and on my own car no less LOL what are the odds!

Good work. Thanks for sharing your experience. Guess there must be enough difference between TCU's to cause problems.
