Custom Power Steering Line Thread
I know some people are interested in making the factory lines not so in-the-way. Of course, after I make my lines, I find a better way to do it. Earl's makes "bump tube" adapters, which mate the factory style bubble flare to a -06 AN male fitting.
A person would need one M16x1.5 male bump tube to -06 for the feed at the pump. Two female bump tube to -06 adapters would be for the rack end of the lines, one sized M14x1.5 and the other M16x1.5.
They can be bought here: http://www.anplumbing.com/shop/index.ph ... ept=Metric
For the lines and fittings themselves, you would need to use a proper hydraulic hose. High-side power steering lines run between 1000 and 1500 psi, so your typical stainless braided hose is not going to cut it. The hydraulic hose is actually cheaper, and the steel fittings for it are actually A LOT cheaper than the fancy aluminum stuff from Aeroquip.
As far as how you would run the lines, you are on your own since it depends on what you have going on in your engine bay. The nice thing about the reusable hose ends is that you can cut the hose to fit how you want. The hose ends are really easy to put together if you are scared of trying it yourself.
If you do it right, you should be able to make nice custom lines for less than $150, easy.

Awesome, I hate the factory lines after installing the EJ20G. They're all bent up now and I'm worried they're partially kinked in places from trying to bend them with a tube bender not designed to unbend bends.

Re: Custom Power Steering Line Thread
This is where my system sits at the moment, although I'm thinking about changing it. Running around the upipe is the major issue. I'm debating using the Versil-Flare to make my own hard-lines to go around the uppipe or not.
I'd like to get rid of my welded fittings just because I don't trust myself that well. 50 psi exhaust is one thing, but 1200 psi fluid is another.

We need Dan back. I still need to do this. There's a local hydraulics place but they told me they don't do metric fittings. I really need some new hoses for my ps. I'm driving the legacy daily again and it really sucks not having power steering.

Williams Oil Filter may make you some. They made custom brake lines for my friends honda. Maybe they'll do power steering lines as well.

Re: Custom Power Steering Line Thread
I was thinking about a remote resivor for mine off a newer legacy, but porbably more trouble than worth it.

Re: Custom Power Steering Line Thread
What is the point of the remote reservoir? I'm actually wondering, not trying to be rude. I have a wrx pump and remote reservoir but unless it holds more fluid, I don't see the point. It's more clutter under the hood.

Re: Custom Power Steering Line Thread
I'm guessing the pump has more flow/demand....? The wrx reservoir is significantly larger than the early legacy res. Not that we're talking about the wrx specifically...

The remote reservoir is to help accommodate the intake piping under the intake manifold.

Is the intake piping that much different than the EJ20K that I have? It must be because the reservoir they had on that car cleared it just fine.Legacy777 wrote:The remote reservoir is to help accommodate the intake piping under the intake manifold.

Re: Custom Power Steering Line Thread
So today I went to grab my spare set of power steering hoses to take to a shop to build me new ones and while looking at the ones on my car I realized I already replaced them with other stock 1st gen hoses and did a better job bending them. They don't look kinked at all. So now I'm wondering if the pump is not working or if theres an adjustment on the rack that needs adjusting. I remember an insert on the rack that I tightened as close to spec as I could get it that seemed to apply pressure to the cylinder inside the rack. Maybe it's too tight?
I'm going to go look up and probably order a pump rebuild kit. Maybe someone can sell me their EJ22T pump in known good working condition so I can swap it out and see if that's the issue.

Re: Custom Power Steering Line Thread
The non-turbo & turbo pumps are the same. The 93-94 models got a different part number. I believe someone posted in my p-steering pump rebuild thread about the difference they noted.

Re: Custom Power Steering Line Thread
If you're going through all the trouble and expense of modifying the lines, for an extra $50 head down to the junk yard and pick up a power steering pump and pigtale from a Mazda3 and go electric. I bought my pump for $30, wiring was $20, fuse $6, and my custom lines were roughly $40. I used a reservoir from a later gen Legacy (the one that sits on the passenger side of the engine bay. Total cost ~$100. Once I get everything installed I can post pictures. (May not happen for a bit, there's a lot goin on at the moment). However, a similar setup was installed on UK's fastest Legacy. TeamLegacyUK if anyone is wondering.

Re: Custom Power Steering Line Thread
its gonna be a while. However for more info check out TeamLegacyUK. He's done the exact same mod but with a Citroen Saxo VTS pump that's similar to the Mazda3 style. I've later found that although similar the Mazda3 pump works better at reacting under heavy load than the Citroen pump does. Theres an age gap there too. He's since gone back to a normal belt driven pump. I've also played with the idea of swapping to a full custom subframe that will mount the 14+ STi rack. It's full electric with no hydraulics. Just gotta wire up the control unit to power n ground, everything else is housed inside the rack.

I've had mixed experiences with the electric assist power steering racks I've driven. Some have felt like utter shit, while others have not been noticeable.
