AWD and FWD 5mt difference

Post by dayno »

Hey All,

I have just finished auto to 5mt conversion. All is working well but I now feel like a new challenge. I would like to swap to AWD. I found a awd of the same year that i can get the parts from cheap.....

The only problem is the donor car is an auto......

I would like to keep the manual as i just did the swap...

What are the differences between the fwd 5mt and the awd 5mt.

Can I take the rear case off the fwd 5mt and connect to the transfer case of the AWD?

from what i have read from service manual there doesnt seem to be much difference.

Is the gearing different?

Has anyone else done this before?

Thanks in advance

Josh (Legacy777) has a good writeup on his site detailing his AWD conversion. Off the top of my head you won't need too many MT specific things, just:
- A 5MT trans - you can't swap the rear-half on without changing all the gears and the diff - definitely not worth it.
- MT 4.111 rear diff
- AWD MT trans cross-mbr (I think there are slight differences)
- Driveshaft
- Shift linkage?
Everything else for the swap should be AT/MT independent.

*Edit* I just saw "Liberty" in your sig... Gearing was funny down there, so I hear... You should double check the gearing of things before mixing and matching.

Oh, and If you happen to find the famous hi-low AWD MT transmission in your searches, I will pay you to ship it to the states ;)
Cheers,
morgan

You will need to get an AWD 5MT trans. I know you just did the auto to manual swap, but if you want to go to AWD, you'll need an AWD trans.

I've got a good write-up and parts list of what's needed on my site
