Can these sleeves be re-surfaced?

Happy new year all, I have two engines, one is 22T from a 91SS and one is 98 Legacy GT DOHC.

I ll be installing the DOHC heads on the 2.2T block, after the 2.2T cylinder sleves are replaced. (See Build Thread)

Where is the best place to purchace oversized sleves, which ones for the larger displacement 2.34T build?

And if possible, what cost are involved?

I will have access to machine shops when I move from the island this summer.

I'm not sure it's really cost effective to have your block re-sleeved. The place I took my motor to charges $1399 + tax for sleeving a subaru block (all inclusive) - using Darton sleeves. That may be on the high side, but you should be able to find an EJ22T for $500 or less. Add an oversize bore, cleaning and polish and you're still only $600-800 out, all said and done.

wow. thank you for reply, well that is intense.

I am pretty capable when it comes to messing with mechanics, am I foolish to think I can do this on my own?

Those prices are way too serious for my build.

The 2.3 liter size on an EJ22 block usually comes from stroking with an EJ25 crank, not from sleeving a larger bore.

An more than a standard oversize and I would seriously look at a stock EJ255/257 shortblock. They are really hard to beat on the cost/performance scale.

Unless you're talking crazy power, I would likely not suggest resleeving since most sleeves are beefier. Just try and find another block to use.

Are the sleeves fix-able?
Is re-surfacing the sleeves an option?
The last thing I want to do is scrap the entire block.

Has anyone re-surfaced cylinder sleeves before or know if it is practiced?

Do I re-sleeve or is it re-surfacable?, and if so, by what method?

I do not want to scrap this block.

That is too deep to simply resurface. IIRC, Subaru's maximun overbore is .020". Those scratches look closer to .050".

The bores can be resleeved, but prices and quality vary wildly. Always get references for work such as this. Also make sure the machine shop understands how a Subaru is assembled, or they might miss a detail or two. For a mild build, there is usually no need for custom "Subaru" sleeves. Universal sleeves are made in almost any bore size needed and the machine shop modifies them for the purpose. Subarus need more machine work on the sleeves than most motors. This increases the cost and the possibilities for mistakes.

As stated above, unless your going for ultimate power, or have a sentimental reason to keep the EJ22t, look for a new/different block or look to an EJ255/257 semi closed deck. Sleeving is generally not worth the time, effort or money on common, easily replaceable, motors like ours.

That block is fubar, hands down.You may not want to scrap it but you will spend way more on it than a new one...or three.And who knows what possibility of compromise or cracking that incident caused aside from the sleeve damage.

I suppose i could bronze it as a centerpiece or somthing.
