First subaru owner, want to say hello and have a questions
*ESL speaker, sorry if my English irritates you.
Hi,my name is NG and i am from Asia, i am now going to college in CA. I have owned a few cars but this is my very first Subaru.
I bought a 1992 Legacy L,199.990 miles,5 speeds,OK exterior,OK interior for 800$. I bought it to be my daily driver, fishing equipment hauler and to keep the other car's mileage low. Beside the unknown brand name exhaust (it actually sounds good thou, love the rumble sound) and the intake,it is basically stock. The previous owner claimed that the one before him had done the timing bell and water pump somewhere in 120k to 140k but i highly doubt its legitimate. Car has no AC/Heater,no radio but i don't need it as long as it is drivable.
So,here comes the question. After i turn off the engine, there is a whining/spinning noise comes from the intake, near the ABS box area. It keep spinning for hours and at the time i post this, it haven't stopped yet. I worry that it might drain out my battery or will cause some sort of problems to the engine.
I will take the car to the shop tomorrow to have it tuned up but while waiting, is there any way to stop that
whining sound ? or just simply leave it that way.

Re: First subaru owner, want to say hello and have a questio
Is it the fans for the radiator that's still spinning after the car is turned off?
Taking the ground off the battery post will stop the sound, grab a 10mm wrench to losen the nut.
Maybe the noise is an injector that's stuck open, do you have any problems starting the car or while it's idling/driving?

Re: First subaru owner, want to say hello and have a questio
i assumed it was a fan for the radiator but it has been spinning like that for at least 2 hours. I am going to wait for another hour before disconnect the battery. If i disconnect the battery, will i need to jump start it tomorrow ?
Re: First subaru owner, want to say hello and have a questio
Edited my above post with more info.
No, your battery will be fine tomorrow if you leave it disconected over night. If there is anything draining power from the battery now it will save the battery life so you CAN start your car in the morning.

Re: First subaru owner, want to say hello and have a questio
i did have a little problem starting the engine. It cranks for 2 or 3 sec and sounds like it is low on the battery but then it starts just fine. No problem on idling.
Re: First subaru owner, want to say hello and have a questio
There are two wire connectors on the end of the injectors. There are two injectos on either side of the engine. They should be either brown or grey (i think) try pushing down on the release tab and disconecting one at a time to see if the noise stops.

Re: First subaru owner, want to say hello and have a questio
I will take a look on it right now but if i leave it that way, will it be harmful to the engine internal ?
Anyway, i appreciate your help.
Thank you.

Re: First subaru owner, want to say hello and have a questio
If it's the injector and it's stuck on (I've heard of them being stuck open but I havn't heard anything about them ever staying on) it'll put whatever fuel is left in the lines (the fuel pump isn't on so there won't be additional fuel or pressure being brought forward from the tank) but the fuel could go through your rings and get into your oil or it could damage your valves when you go to start your car.
It's probably not the injectors, but.... process of elimination here.

Re: First subaru owner, want to say hello and have a questio
I found the buzzing noise came from the unit right next to the ABS box (passenger side). I disconnected the battery and the noise went away. I will have a mechanic to take a look tomorrow to find out the problem. I will keep you updated.

Re: First subaru owner, want to say hello and have a questio
It's the ABS relay, take the screw off the ABS box and remove the cover, pull the relay(should be the one closest to the front of the car but try both), you can drive without it, but I'd recommend replacing it when you get the chance since your ABS won't work. It will kill your battery if you leave it buzzing. For now try hitting the relay against something hard a couple times and plugging it in again.
Re: First subaru owner, want to say hello and have a questio
I really think it's about the ABS relay since once i noticed the buzzing sound,ABS light was on. It too dark to see anything now and i have to turn in a term paper within an hour,i'll will do it tomorrow morning. Thank you everyone.

Re: First subaru owner, want to say hello and have a questio
Reason I'm confident about it is that it happened to me recently, exactly as described. And when I tell you to hit it against something, it's because the relay is stuck open so it knocks it loose, it'll get stuck again but might take a few months to do it, luckily if you pay attention you'll notice because it will only happen after driving.

UPDATED:
You were right on the ABS relay. I removed the relay, smashed it really with a hammer
but haven't put it back on.That buzzing sound is now gone.
