Unorthodox Underdrive Pulley install
Yeah...I've got one. My main concern, and again is why I haven't done the underdrive pulley yet, is the fact you're slowing the rotation of the accessories, mainly the alternator. I've got a fair amount of load on my electrical system, stereo, lights, driving lights, etc. How are things at an idle with lights on, and stuff? You notice a difference, are they dimmer? Other thought I had too was finding a pulley that was small for the alternator, this would in-turn increase the speed that it would turn at idle, nothing too drastic, just to compensate for the decrease in size of the underdrive pulley. I think if I could successfully do this, I would put the underdrive on?

Unorthodox Underdrive Pulley install
This is a quote from the UOR FAQ:
12) "Can I use the underdrive pulleys if I have a high wattage stereo
system ?"
The Ultra A, R, S & SS pulleys still allow stereo systems of up to
approximately 400 watts RMS. If the stereo system in question is
above the amount then the owner has two options. One we can make a
custom alternator pulley, which will be smaller in diameter and will
increase the voltage output, or they can purchase capacitors.
Capacitors are the better choice as they store the power the amps
need for peak draw of the amplifiers, these units allow the owners to
achieve the cleanest and most powerful sound with no loss of voltage
even with underdrive pulleys installed. Another good option would be
to install a second battery for the stereo.
Our 1988 Project RX-7 has a 700 watt RMS stereo and our 1993 Project
Supra has a 500 watt RMS stereo and they both have no voltage drop
problems with our underdrive pulleys."
I didn't notice any difference in my lights, even with the stereo
on. I'm sure the difference isn't enough to effect all but the most
incredible setups. I'd bet that you might not even notice it.

I would wonder about the dampening effects of the Unorthodox <that's what it
is right?> pulley... No rubber in there to cancel out any harmonics. I know
when we had Jay's engine out, I noticed that the stock crank pulley looked
almost exactly the same as the one on my Eclipse turbo. SO with out the
dampening charecteristics of the stock pulley, what kind of damage can be
done here? The only under drive pulley I would run on my Mitsu's is the
Buschur Racing <http://www.buschurracing.com> one because it retains the
rubber dampner. If you'll notice, most of the fast v8 guys that still have
crank pulleys, have ones with rubber in them........... just a thought...
For more on the whole solid vs rubber filler crank pulley check out:
http://www.pacarsearch.com/stealth/udp.htm Its based on the
3000Gt/Stealth/GTO cars, but its principles may still apply. I say may
because of the nature of the boxer Subaru engine.
Later,
Gary

yah....I've got just about everything I can do to the stereo system except rip everything out and start over...I've got a 1 farad cap, and now the optima battery which does wonders for clean power. System is very crisp.
I have a friend that has 2.5 rs, and he did the underdrive pulley and his lights dim a bit at idle compared to when normally running....I don't know I guess I'm just a little hesitant....I'm sure having them custom make a pulley would cost an arm and leg.
Hmmmm....what to do.
Dave with your lights on and everything at idle, how much of an increase in brightness of the interior lights do you notice when you rev it to 1500 rpm or something like that to bring the alternator speed up?

Gary, the flat 2.2 has no harmonic dampner because it's inherently
balanced.
Look at the pulley i got from my car, it doesn't have any
characteristics of what you'd find on an inline-4, say a Honda or
Mitsubishi.
It's been gone over numerous times, but it doesn't need to be
dampened.

Thanks Dave!
Hey I was surfin your site.....ran across the article from Kevin about the suspension setup...That's awesome!!! Definitely has alot of very good info in it. Now all I need is some money...haha
I may be looking into the whitelines from teagues auto though.
'Nother thing dave...you ever go through with the tranny swap? I still would like to do it, but it won't happen if it happens, till I have another car to drive and a place to work on it, and of course money. I just changed the tranny fluid and the external filter on it last week. Do you know if your's has the external add-on filter on it? It'd be bolted on to the frame just inside engine compartment next to the battery. If you don't have one I'd recommend getting the kit....it's like $15. Here's the subaru Part number 31099AA091 It come's with everything you need....i couldn't buy the filter separate so I had to buy the kit. To my knowledge the filter that was on there was the orignal one that got installed....haha
It seems to shift a little better, but the tranny is still slippin. I'll have to see how it drives when I put my wheels and tires back on in a couple weeks. The snow tires are 185's not 175's, they're taller, and with the smaller dia tires the car is more peppy. Don't know why the FWD cars got the smaller tires....

Unorthodox Underdrive Pulley install
After repeated long, good posts by Kevin, i told him that he should
just write it all down and i'd put it up on my site. Whaddya know,
he did it! Make me want to get some TEINs or DMS Gold
My AT is still holding in pretty well, suprisingly enough, save for
the torque-bind thing that rears its head on occasion. I'm going to
hold back on replacing the trans till i must, and concentrate on
getting more power (which will eventually be the death of it, i'm
sure).
Since i didn't have to replace my timing belt and waterpump, i had
Charles replace the AT filter, since he pointed it out to me and it
looked as if it'd been on there for some time. The turbos had all
the goodies stock.
He got the whole kit ($35), but informed me that the filter alone is
over $60. I didn't need any of the other crap because it was already
there. Surely a killer addition to any automatic!
There are rumours/facts/lies out there that the Forester MT is the
same as the WRX. If so, i might source one of these instead of a
rare Legacy Turbo MT or in lieu of importing a WRX one. I might even
be able to get an LSD from a Forester as well. Bonus!

just write it all down and i'd put it up on my site.

Unorthodox Underdrive Pulley install
Josh-the only problem I had with the undrive pulley was adjustment of the new belts. I had to open up (by grinding) more room in the adjustment slide to tighten the belts properly. Sometimes, when cold, the belt(s) will squeal a little until warmed up (5-10 secs.). I`ve noticed no dimming of lights or decrease in battery power due to this install. I may, in the future, install the underdrive pulley on the alternator just to `balance` things out. BTW, I ordered my MSD Dis-2 unit & will be installing next week. Will up date in early April. Also, if anyone orders the same unit, you do NOT need a tach adapter for our cars-turbo or NA. This per Trey @ Cobb Tuning. I`ll post after my vacation-Regards-ROD (No. Az.)

Comments, suggestions, ideas?
