After tranny swap, check engine light is on

Post by Weston_Duyck »

So I just did a transmission swap on my car and everything went well until I went for a test drive and check engine lights came on and I realized I forgot to clamp down two of the hoses and fluid went everywhere. After all that I refilled it and all seemed good until I went for another drive. I started my car and the power button was blinking(not sure what that means) but I did a little drive anyway and the check engine light came back on so I pulled over and checked everything under the hood and everything seemed fine except my second fan was going and I think had been going the whole trip. If anyone can make any sense of this please help, I'm really tired of it just sitting here I really wanna drive her.

I still need to run the codes, but I don't have my own reader yet so I have to take it to AutoZone. But one thing I forgot to mention is that my speedo was working but the cable does work(put a drill and spun it) so I think it just wasn't seated completely. But I'm about to run to autozone to see what codes are being thrown an I'll let you guys know

I believe to found the problem(self diagnosed) so not sure if its right

1. Check engine light could be coming from headers not being bolted tight(I see exhaust coming out lol)
2. No Speedo/blinking power light 16 times makes me believe one of my speed sensors is out.

Can anyone clarify this?

I bet it's error code 33 for in proper voltage from the sensor in the guage cluster if the speedo isn't working right.

I also just found out my odometer and trip meter don't read. Could that be because of that error too and if so how can I fix it?

Why are you guessing on what the problem is if you haven't checked the DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes) yet? You're wasting your time. Go under the dash directly under your steering column and plug the two black connectors hanging there into one another. Then turn the ignition on but don't start the car. The check engine light will flash the codes. The slow blinks represent the first digit in the code and the quick blinks is the second digit in the codes. Then look them up and go from there. BSOD2600 already provided the link above to this procedure along with a list of the DTCs. I'm guessing your speedo cable isn't plugged into your trans which will throw codes for the VSS and it will make the car run poorly.

I would try that but the person I bought the car from cut the green connectors to do that so I need to solder some new ones on and check it. And as for the speedo I've tried getting it there several times and I could of swore it was in but I could be wrong.

You might need to replace the base part of the cable that screws into the tranny. They tend to fall apart when you remove it from the tranny and then the speedo cable doesn't grab properly when you go to put it back together.

You don't need the green connectors. You need to connect the black connectors together. Also I'm almost positive autozone won't be able to pull codes from OBD1 ECUs.

The green one is for doing testing I think. Test mode or something.

Hmm ok well everything is running great so I'm not to worried but it's still a concern so I'll get testing going tomorrow. Oh another question, not sure if you can answer it but do you any idea why my second cooling fan is always running...does it cool tranny fluid?

No it should not be on all the time. Mine did that before and it I messed with the plugs on the fans making sure they were both plugged in all the way and it fixed the problem. I would definitely check out the codes in the ECU right away just so you know what it is. It's super easy to do. I've done it like 5 times in the last 2 days.

Alright thanks for all the help. So just plug in the blank connecters and crank the engine and count the CEL flashes?

No. Just plug the two black connectors together and turn the ignition to the on (the one after accessory) but don't turn it hard enough to start the car. Then count the flashes.

Green connectors are for CELs that are currently being tripped.

Black connectors are for CELs stored in the memory. If your memory hasn't cleared in a while, than you might have a few stored.
