:x I have figured that there is no inexspensive way to fix my transmission.

Its hard enough to find a transmission that will fit in my 91 legacy turbo, but even if I do they're just as exspensive as geting an original trans, its even more exspensive to get it rebuilt.

So unless any one has or knows of a auto transmission from 91 to 94 legacy turbo or 92 to 94 legacy AWD or any other subaru with a 3.9 rear differential for a cheap price I would very much like to know so.

One more thing If somone could tell me if a legacy AWD (dont know if its a 90 or 91) transmission would work in my 91 legacy turbo. I know my car has a 3.9 rear diff and I know that the legacy AWD has a 4.111 rear diff, but Ciper mentioned that it would work. Something to do with the axles?

thanks,
the insanely pissed off at his car for having exspensive ass transmissions guy

Im 99.9% sure that if you installed the 90-91 transmission and left the drive shaft out the car would work fine. The part you would need is a differential to match, which should be easy to find since 4.11 is very common.

Even better would be to find a 4.11 diff and swap the ring and pinion into your existing diff!!!! Then you would have the LSD still.

Im purchasing a 4.44 lsd from a fellow group member just for this, Ill swap my current gears into it for lsd.

If you dont car about the LSD as much you could sell it to one of many members and get some money for the repairs...

the turbo has a beefened (is that a word?) up clutch and there are some real differences between the two trannys. My 1990 service manuals dont say what they are :( but I read somewhere else that there are some fairly major differences. I keep thinking that its that the L is a dry clutch and the turbo is not, but i just dont know that much about 4wd drivetrains.

And that the gears are shot-peened for strength.

RacerX . . . there is a turbo legacy in the junkyard near me (I sound like a broken record), and it has an auto, but I'm not sure of the condition. I think it's like $150, but again, it's a gamble with a car in a yard. FWIW, there is no real damage to the car that would make me think the tranny's damaged . . .

Boostjunkie if you could give me the junkyards phone # it would be a big help. Thanks

And Ciper your saying that all I need to do is take a 4.11 transmission and a 4.11s ring and pinion and put them in my car.

Appreciate the help.

I think/hope so.

I was talking to my subaru mechanic (a specialist) about it. I told him that I would have the 4.44 LSD and the 4.11 standar differential for my car. I asked that if I just dropped them off could he swap the stuff out.

He said that you should replace all three seals and a nut on the front. Also that some part had to be tightened in a special way.
