Why the high idle?

So i am driving 90 wagon 2.2 N/A and when i pull up to a stop light or stop in general the car will idle at 2250. At first it would just idle there for a second then shudder down to about a grand but now it just stays up there. Have heard about resetting the ECU by unhooking the battery for the night is this recommended? What should i do to get the idle back down I hve to almost slam it into reverse without grinding the gears to much.

Is the car still cold when this happens?

How long has it been doing this? Is there any maintenance or anything that may have been done just before this occurred?

When this was happening to me, I needed to re-adjust the TPS per the FSM.

TPS = Throttle Position Sensor
FSM = Field Service Manual. This is posted in the stuff you need to know forum.
Basically my TPS was starting to fail and it needed to be readjusted to compensate for it going outside of the expected voltage ranges.

When did the engine start having the high idle? Or has it always had a high idle since you owned it?

Just recently it started. like maybe a week. It seems to only do it if I get on it and drive it like that. But once I drive it calmly and be nice it will idle like normal I don't really know if all this makes sense.

my 92 legacy used to do the same thing
all i did was just turn the screw by the throttle body to the left 180 degrees
never had a problem since.

I'd suggest starting by checking to see if any codes are stored in the ECU. instructions are on my site

Sometimes the ECU just needs to relearn things if you have ambient changes. You could try resetting the ECU and see if that changes anything.
