can you run the stock legacy top hats on the '05 WRX spring? or is it necessary to slot the body?

Yes, you can. But the '05 springs are tapered, i believe, making the use of pre-facelift ('89-'91) tophats necessary. Using those, you wouldn't need to slot the body.
The suspension compendium thread covers all of this, but it can be a bit daunting to read through.
93 legacy wagon L, 22T swapped (TW imitator) now with five forward speeds. (Gone, but never forgotten)
