so after absorbing 3 tons of grease

Post by lucas »

Took my intake manifold off yesterday(ultra PITA) Replaced intake manifold gaskets, throttle body gaskets, Cleaned and replaced IACV gaskets. Engine was just barely kinda warm by the time I got to the IACV and the little door was maybe alittle more than 1/4 in open is that bad?

Anyway got all that crap put back together, was terrified that i had dropped some dirt into the heads blew it out with air best i could, Car will now run consistent 9-10psi boost at wot. At idle with the lights on and the brakes depressed it still idles really bad and stumbles constantly ( shows 18 in Hg on vaccum ). So either its the IACV is just retarded or i have some kind of short. With that all being said anyone know a good electrician in the tacoma/seattle area? Or anyone have an idea?

Didnt your idle do that before you cleaned everything? How does it run at idle with the lights off and off the brakes? When i was having issues with my iac it barely idled 400-500 rmp and almost died without giving it gas. Seems like a ground issue. Did you clean up your ECU ground on behind the driver side fuel rail while you were back there? I would try that, really improved my idle when i cleaned up that connection and added another ground wire there (after i had fixed my IAC issue).

you know i wanted to clean that all up but unfortunately I didnt have the time in the shop i was working. I live on a military base on there housing and use there facility that keep bankers hours, and i work night shift so my day off is half gone while the shop is open. So i only get half the work done.

It idles ok with the lights off and the no brakes applied, still seems to stumble a little bit but not much. Then again it idles really crappy after reving it up but somewhat stabilizes around 500 rpm +- . Where exactly is that grounding point? and cna i get to it without taking the manifold off again?

The ground point for the ECU is on the back side of the intake manifold on the driver's side. You should be able to get to it without removing the intake manifold. It's kind of a pain, but you should be able to get to it. You can kind of see the bolt in this picture.

No it's over near where the manifold bolts to the heads. I'll have to circle the bolt I'm talking about and repost the picture. Remind me if I don't post something in the next day or two.

You could always just adjust the IAC. Just turn it til it runs about 750 at idle.

hmm ya i see it now thank you. funny cause when i was in there i looked at that and went huh i wonder if thats the grounding point thats messed up. So looks like its on the passenger side and i could possibly get to it by not removing the intake manifold agian.

The IAC has two set screws on the top if that doesnt work. Sometimes the electronic unit on the top is dead so you can just pick one up from a junk yard for a few bucks. That's what I did on my 98 RS. It has the top unit from a 92 Legacy and it works just fine once you adjust the idle.

huh ill have to try to get a separate motor for the IAC, i did notice thought that a late 90's 2.5 has the same four bolt mounting set up as the turbo one in our cars. maybe worth a try?
