Engine casting number 771488... What year?

Post by fngearhead »

Simple as that. I have that casting number on the 2.2 NA that is in my 93 turbo wagon. Google isn't being all that helpful. Local dealer is supposedly looking into it for me. It needs a timing belt and the spare I have from a '96 2.2 seems just a bit longer, maybe 2-3 extra teeth. The '96 belt is probably the reason the car is running so bad lately.

Where is that number located on the engine? I'm not sure you're going find much that will allow you trace that number back to a MY.

The timing belt for the 2.2 engine is pretty much the same. There are a three different belts.

13028AA102 - Is the belt used on all the Impreza & Legacy 1.8 & 2.2's up until 1998.
13028AA150 - Is a California specific belt used on all the Impreza & Legacy 1.8 & 2.2's up until 1998.
13028AA231 - Is the belt used on all the Impreza & Legacy 1.8 & 2.2's from 1999 - 2001.

I'd say with 99% confidence that you have an EJ22 from a 90-94 Legacy or similar since you're using it in your 93 turbo wagon. The dual exhaust port EJ22's only went up to possibly 95 in the Legacy. I'd suggest using tbelt 13028AA102. If you are sure the belt from your 96 is that belt, hasn't stretched, and is in good condition, it should be fine to use.

I counted teeth on old and newer, both have 211, so I stuck the good one back on. It still has timing marks and text on it so should be good for a while. I'm just still dealing with the odd running issues. It acts like timing is off, but the marks all line up. I don't really know what else to do with this thing now. I'm hesitant to call in professional help on it since the ultimate plan is to put a turbo motor back in it sooner than later.
