Just how long can you drive on a torn CV boot?

I'm gonna be taking my Legacy on a pretty long trip here pretty soon, I have no idea how to change the CV boot or axle even myself, so I was wondering if maybe it will be safe? it doesn't "click" or anything when turning or anything like that. Was sort of thinking maybe at least just for the trip putting some axle grease up in there and using a little duct tape or something like that to seal it off? what do you guys think?

Also how long have you gone on the torn CV boot? I've put something like 5,000 miles on mine I think D:

How long is your trip?

I've driven one about 1,000 miles on a joint that was clicking going straight. I smeared grease in there when I got started, which probably helped things.

Another duct tape mechanic - I feel at home now :)

I hope you enjoy a trouble-free trip!

basically, can run it til it runs dry of grease and the ball bearings seize and burn up..........due to heat. it probably will not catch fire.

run it and see. report back.

ohh yeah not that long. it isn't even clicking yet either. I'm looking at maybe 300 or so miles. I was thinking of smearing grease in there, then duct taping the boot closed where it's ripped haha. not sure how well that will work. Good to know that yours lasted when it was that broken that many miles though, mine doesn't even click with turning yet.

front left. From my understanding the fronts go out often because of turning so much or turning the wheel too tight.

-I'm about to go on a 1000 mile trip to So. Cal. from Denver and my fronts click a little while turning, and i have a rear inner boot that is ripped. Hope I'll be okay. Well I should cause nothing is different now when i went on my 2000 mile trip to Ft. Hood and back a couple months ago!

I ran 6 months on a torn cv, halfway through the winter on the snowiest day after 4 hours of shens and abuse, it failed as I turned into my driveway, drove into the garage with rwd and a slipping center.
