A few 4eat questions.

Post by Danny-G »

First the more important one. Noticed this a few months ago when I got to a friends after driving on the highway at 55mph for about five minutes and when I shifted into reverse I heard a growling from the gear selector area. It did it for about two seconds then stopped when the car started moving. Is something going bad in the transmission or is it normal for a higher mileage auto to growl in reverse?
Second, more of a simple curiosity question. The '91 wagon I've been taking parts off has the "AT Oil Temp" feature. If I was to take the tcu from the wagon and put it in my '93 would I gain the "AT Oil Temp" light feature or not? I read the drivers visor info about that light and it says its supposed to come on after hard driving, I figure since I do drive my car hard it would be good to know when to take it easy and let the transmission cool down. I do know my gauge cluster has the light in it, I added a bulb to it but nothing has happened after hard driving. If the tcu isn't compatable with my '93 or theres a sensor I need then forget it lol.

Can you describe the growling a little more? It doesn't sound like it's normal.

Oh boy this is gunna be fun lol. First off, I don't think its a normal sound. I never heard it before in the car even before I was driving it. Never heard it in any car for that matter. The sound isn't any bit like the 5mt reverse gear noise, its more of a lowish rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr kinda sound. It does get louder with the speed though. Its been a while since I've heard it so I'm not totally sure at the moment. I might take my camera and go for a drive to see if I can get it to make noise again. Hope my explination was of some help.

I wonder if the carrier bearing or mount for the driveline is worn and allowing the driveline to move around.

Any way to check if the bearing or mount are bad?

You can get under the car and try moving around the drive line where the carrier bearing mounts to the chassis. There will be a little bit of movement, but it should not be excessive.
