93 legacy turbo map swap possibilities?

Post by imaiami »

howdy all,
I'm a proud new owner of a little turbo legacy wagon. went to go check this out and lo behold, there's a little snail under the hood.
so I got her all haggard running,
did inj cleaner,
plugs,
cleaned maf,
cleaned air filter,
oil change,
and all got running and idling well.
then go to give her a little boost and cel throws. 45, atmospheric pressure sensor.
so come to find this sensor is not easy to come by, part num 22012AA020,
which costs 409.00 from subaru to get 1 of the 5 left in the usa.

so is there any alternative to this? what about the map 22012AA070 out of the newer 95-01? or just a generic bosch unit that puts out the same voltage?
or any other alternatives since I gotta get this car fully dailyable in the next couple of days.
thansk a much,
dustin

Hi Dustin,

Code 45 can be either the pressure sensor or the pressure exchange solenoid. Instead of putting a separate barometric sensor in the turbo ECU for altitude and weather corrections, they just used a solenoid to switch the pressure sensor from the intake manifold reading to atmosphere.

The default setting of the solenoid is obviously to the manifold, and the solenoid typically switches to atmosphere when cruising. If the ECU doesn't get the atmospheric readings, it could throw a code 45. What I'd suggest doing is applying 12v across the pressure exchange solenoid and listen for a click. If it does not click, the solenoid is bad. There is a more likely chance that solenoid is bad than the pressure sensor.

Here is testing information for the pressure sensor in the even the pressure exchange solenoid is ok.

went out and checked, all worked, so went over all the vacuum/ pressure lines and badabing, broke line.
car is all good to go now. :D

Glad to hear it was a simple vacuum line.

always love when the simple solutions can be found.
now the darnded thing cranks away at times forever til it gets spark. then it runs like a champ. it'll then start fine for the next few times, then randomly just crank away with no spark.
sounds like this could be the crank sensor/ or cam sensor? I guess I got to look into this car more.....
thanks for helping me solve what I thought was the map prob :D
