I am cautiously optimistic that swapping either new WRX heads or 98 2.5 RS heads is the most practical path to stunning performance from a North America 2.2 EJ22T turbo engine.
My son has a Minnan turbocharged 98 RS and he blew a cylinder liner. This is good news for us, because if his experience is typical, then it means that the bottom end of those engines could be likely to die while the heads are still good. His 2.5 has 9.5/1 compression. I don't know how much of that comes from stroke, how much comes from piston shape and how much comes from head shape. It would be very nice of the combustion volume of the 2.5 heads was comparable to that of the EJ22T heads. It is my understanding that the new USA WRX has 8.0/1 compression just like the EJ22T, so unchanged compression ratio would be my preference. For those of us who live in an area of low octane fuel (USA "premium" is typically 92 octane) an appropriate compression ratio for a high octane country like Japan would just be a formula for detonation to us.

Head Swap is Holy Grail
Bill,
Could you enlighten a newbie and tell me how new heads will help the
power cause?
I am interested, as I have heard this before.

That may be true for him, but the 2.2 Turbo engine is much stronger then the
2.5. Closed deck block, and oil squirters umong other things make it all
around better.
