M/T fluid question

Post by Bender-san »

So I've got the typical poor 5th gear synchro in my '93 wagon. It is fine when the transmission is cold, and much worse as it warms up. My question is this: Has anyone tried the 75W140 GL-5 fluid instead of the recommended 75W90 GL-5 as a band-aid to synchro replacement? If so, how were the results? My hope is that the heavier fluid will help the synchro from slipping at normal operating temperature, although I must admit I'm a touch worried about how it will handle cold driving.

I think I've heard of someone using it, and think it may have helped the synchro issue, but don't recall if he had any cold temp issues.

Well I'll guinea pig it and report my findings.

I'm currently running 1 qt. MOTUL300 75w90 and the rest Lightweight Shockproof and I've been very happy with it. Have had zero issues when it hits -20.

Had straight MOTUL in it prior......... prior to 2nd gear blowing up (Loaned it to the inlaws :()

Also, the straight MOTUL got rid of the 3rd gear grind that the MOBIL 1 synthetic instantly caused.

Interesting. I'm running the 1quart motul300 and red line lightweight shockproof and it didn't help a bit with my shitty synchros. Was a complete waste of about $80 and I spilled it all over my engine bay including on the turbo blanket and that smelled pretty bad for a while.

75W140 seems to slow down shifting, I don't like it. It's more annoying when warm than cold. But you have issues with 75W90, it's time for experiments.

I may try a half-and-half blend of 75W90 and 75W140 to start with. I'm not certain I need to suck even more power out of my lackluster 2.2 with the full use of heavier fluid. I should really just buy that EJ22t powerplant I found....
