don't forget the rear diff. and I think driveline is different than auto also.

HI,
Finding a 3.9 5-speed will be tough.

EDIT: see below - The Impreza had 3.9, too, but I'd be hesitant to use that tranny behind a Turbo engine. If you can confirm it's strong enough, then maybe that's the easiest swap.

Do some searching on here as the 5-speed swap has been covered. Here's JC's write-up on his experience - LINK. It's what I followed.

I used a '98 Forester 5-speed and rear diff - 4.11 final drive ratio....it bolted right up, other than some drive-line issues due to length and the rear pinion flange bolt spacing changed sometime after '94.

Your '91 has the rare rear VLSD, you can likely sell it on here to recoup some costs.

Sorry totally missed EJ22T 3.90 gear in already. Yes trans will be hard to find in that gear.

I thought most 93 to 95 impreza carried that?

They did. My 97 Impreza OBS has a 3.9 final drive ratio. The gearing is a little lower than the turbo legacy gearing, but the final drive is the same.

I'd be concerned about strength behind the Turbo. I don't think I'd trust it, but maybe there's not that much difference between them?

All the 5spds are pretty much the same. The only real difference is going to be syncro design, and if anything the synchro design will get better with a newer trans.
