Is the differential fluid separate from the tranny fluid?

In my 90 legacy fwd the tranny is making a gear wind noise. I noticed there is a differential dip stick and I never put fluid in it. I just filled the entire transmission up with oil assuming it was included. So my question is: does the differential need to be filled up as well via the dip stick tube?

Mother of god...they are separate. Hopefully it hasn't been completely wrecked by my idiocy. Will normal tranny fluid work?

Also, just kidding as well. It's 80w oil. Please disregard noob post.

Well, now your post count is at 40. :-D

You can use any good 75W90 in both Dif's and the Transfer case. Just don't put it on your Mashed Potatoes, tastes bad.

For some reason the AT differentials call for 80w90. 75w90 should work as well.
