08 Legacy 5mt Speedo help

Post by BoostedSubie »

So, I bought a 08 Legacy Outback 5mt 4.11 a couple months ago for my newest SS build. Well, I'm wrapping up the car right now and did not even think about how the speedo cable was going to install since the newer trans works off a speed sensor. I've been searching around and am getting conflicting information. Some say you can just remove the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission and a cable will screw right in, then others are saying you have to crack the case to install a speedo gear which I am not willing to do
(will void warranty). I will return the transmission to my work for an older 4.11 5mt before I go ripping into the current trans. To add to it, I bought an ACT lightweight flywheel and stage II clutch for this setup so if I do go older, it would have to be a push hydro clutch as well so I can utilize the clutch/flywheel. So, can anyone tell me how the 08 trans would be able to use a speedo cable and if it can not be done without cracking the case, what slightly older trans are capable of just removing the speed sensor and screwing in a cable.

So, I found my answer. To run a speedo cable in that new of a tranny, you do have to split the case and install a gear. So, I just took back the tranny and exchanged it for an 02 Forester tranny which still uses a speed sensor but it is on the tranny instead off of a tone wheel as part of the abs, which means you can just unscrew the sensor and screw in your speedo cable. For those ever looking to install a newer tranny, it looks like 04 was the last year they incorporated the speed sensor on the tranny, at least on the Legacys, not sure on the Imprezas or Foresters. 02 was the newest Forester 5 speed tranny we had so I can't say for sure when they stopped using them. I didn't even check on the Imprezas but I think I remember reading 07 may have been the last year for them.

I think you may be able to use the Impreza trannies up until 07....but can't confirm that. I know the 04 STi trans I have still has the sensor in the trans.
