shut off while driving now wont start

Post by muffin77 »

Well i was driving around some back roads when my car shut off while i was driving. I pull off to the side of the road and it just cranks while trying to start for the first 2 minutes Then just cranks. Well i get it towed home and two days later i decided to mess with it. Same thing just cranks so i checked the codes and dont rememeber the numbers but i got injector one not working and(i think) it the a/f learning(know it had something to do with learning). My uncle tell me it sounds like a fuel problem. The check engine light was on 2 days prior and was hesitant but i threw in some injector cleaner and after 10 miles light went out and didnt hesitate as much. Car has 240,000 miles and ran great till this. So what could it possibly be? Also i only put like 400 miles on this car and have no previous history of it.

It's possible that the timing belt jumped a tooth.

Mike is right. Check the timing belt location. Before I pulled the timing cover though I would suggest checking to make sure the fuel pump turns on when the ignition is keyed. In a relatively quiet area you should be able to hear the fuel pump turn over. I have never witnessed it first hand but I have seen posts where people have had trouble getting their injectors to fire if the battery voltage drops below 11V...and I myself have run into a strange condition on an NA where my alternator quite working and I never got a battery light. As long as you havent pulled the battery for an extended period, you should be able to scan for codes at any time.

If the fuel pump kicks on, i would proceed to check the timing belt. If all is good there check for spark.

The list in the order that I would start:
check non-running battery voltage
check fuel pump operation
Check timing belt location
check for spark
Pull codes from ecu

Let us know what ya find and we can extend the list if necessary.

Welcome to the BBS.

As suggested, I would check the timing belt and fuel pump. You can connect the green diagnostic connectors under the dash, which will cause all the relays to click. This will allow you to check the voltage going to the fuel pump at the connector under the passenger rear seat. The fuel pump will not run with the key just in the ON position and engine not running.

Check out this post for more diagnostic info

You can pull the cover off the driver's side of the timing belt cover and check to see if the belt is still connected.

To be clear. My process for checking the fuel pump is on a manual transmission. Clutch out , key in start position. The fuel oump and injectors should both respond. Sorry if my previous post was misleading. Josh is correct that just turning the key alone will not initiate the pump. But in any case. I would now pull the rear seat, locate the connector for the pump and attempt to power the pump with 12v at the connector and then I would work my way directly to the pump. They are easy to pull as long as the studs arent too corroded.

Turn out it was fuel pump... put one in out of a 99 legacy gt and fired right up... but i striped a nut that holds the pump assembly to tank now nut it stuck on. Any tips how to get this off?

Thats good news. As for the nut, I suppose your talking about one of the small nuts that hold the sending unit assembly to the top of the tank? Those studs are rather delicate. About the only thing I could suggest is putting a pair if vise grips on the nut and oulling up while you gently turn. They do make an item called a nut buster tjlhat litterally cracks the nut into two or more pieces.

On a side note, with a bad fuel pump in the mix I generally suggest putting a new fuel filter on to finish up the job.
