Question about a 97 ej22

Post by 92wagon »

I've seem a car for sale locally that is having some issues.. I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out some possibilities before I think of buying it.

Quoted from the local forum....

"I have a '97 EJ22 with electrical problems (i think), i took it to evergreen subaru a week ago and their diagnosis is a little strange. They're telling me that if i buy a $350 alternator from them to replace my advanced auto parts alternator...it'll fix my engine problem. Would putting a "Subaru" alternator in place of a generic alternator fix a power issue? It doesn't make sense to me, because an alternator is just an alternator to me, i have no technical knowledge about them.

The problem I'm having with the obs is this: when driving, the obs starts to bog after a few mins of driving. The car is going 30mph, my fot hasn't moved but I'm startimg to lose momentum, i push the gas in a little more with no response; i have to floor it to get any response of power."

"Good:
New Battery
New Alternator
New Starter
New Fuel Filter
New Air Filter
New Spark Plugs/ Wires
Have a Brand New Clutch and Flywheel just haven't been installed
Has Current Inspection sticker, Passed back in August or october with no problems.

Bad:
Has the typical rust isn't as bad as most, a lot cleaner then most
CEL is on for a o2 sensor, $60 bucks at advance auto
Pass side rear strut mount needs to be replaced, I have a new one just no time to do it right now.
shifter rattles but works good, heres the fix if wanted. Just didnt bother me enough to fix. http://turninconcept...products_id=357
Car has a slight hesitation now and then, have not been able to figure out the problem. Still runs fine, only does it now and then."

Could it just be the O2 sensor?
Or is it something else electrical?

I changed the color of your text, it was hard to read.

I too would suggest getting a compression test if you can.

As for the problem, an O2 sensor might do that, but I'm not 100% convinced that's the only issue. The alternator thing from the dealer is a bunch of BS IMO (as long as the alternator is good and working, it doesn't matter if it's from autozone or subaru)
