Engine start/running problem

Post by joelegacy »

Ok so I'm working on a 91 ej22t legacy ss 5spd

Problem is when starting the car it revs high (1200-1600) then drops low (400-600) an dies
When it does drop I can tap the throttle an then jumps to 2500 an stays there until I shut it off
So I did to code procedure an it throws #49 which is improper air flow meter

This started after replacing the headgaskets an an various parts but no other sensors
Never had this problem before the head gasket issue

I used a maf cleaner an reinstalled an still no change

Wondering if I'm missing something r I need to replace the maf alltogether

Also wondering if there's a maf upgrade? So I could kill two birds if it does need be replaced

Any info would be a huge help

I would double check all your electrical connectors that may have been removed or bumped during the head gasket work. Did you pull the motor to do the head gasket?

Have you tried clearing the codes and see if the same code comes back? Did you also try the "active" diagnostic green connectors?

Check my connections an cleared the code an the same one popped up again, can't perform the active diagnosis since the car dies

I'm not sure why code 49 would pop up assuming nothing was changed. That code is for an improper MAF sensor. I would double check the electrical/wiring and also check the wiring from the MAF connector to the ECU. Verify all the pins have 0 ohms resistance.

Here are the MAF testing procedures
