6MT or Built 4EAT?

Post by Tommio RS »

Hi there good people of the legacy central!

I come today with a intresting question:

Do i do a 6MT swap into my car?

Do i do full rebuild and make a monster 4EAT?

Will use IPT for the rebuild

Cost is not really much of a problem. If i want it. Ill save for it.

Give you some details of what sort of leggy its going to be going into.

Im going to be buying a really mint body some where soon.

Whatever trans type comes in the car im keeping. EG: If its an auto. It stays auto. Im not a fan of converting!

6MT Pro's:

Basically best bang for your buck manual trans you can get.
Fairly tough. I have only seen/ replaced one in my entire career.
I have seen stock internals handle over 500 pounds of torque.
DCCD!!!

6MT Con's:

None really
Basically just do a trans swap with some mods and do a diff swap
Maybe hub swaps? Not to sure?
Cant launch the car super dam hard being a manual and all. No KNOCKS TO THE LAUNCH THO!!! Just a compare!!!!

4EAT Pro's

Basically best auto subaru has EVER MADE! Still used in 2013 foresters....sadly gone in 2014....
Tough as far as an auto go. Just maintain them and they are good.
Have seen/ driven 1 built up auto. Car was a 2005 leggy GT. The launch was INSANE!!! and had power everwhere!!!! I have yet to find/feel a faster feeling car!
Have read/trolled they can handle over 1000 pounds of torque.
Boost launching!

4EAT Con's

You name anything auto related and its there.
They have torque bind
Have internal weak spots that need addressing.

So ya:

6MT

or

4EAT

Thoughs?

I am personally going the 6mt route with my build or buying an already swapped leggy for fun stuffs. It's all in what you enjoy driving.

I have never met an auto transmission I have liked. I always end up fighting them and wishing I had direct control over what ratio is engaged.

My vote, 6mt all the way.

Why can't you launch a 6mt hard? They use them in built drag cars making 6-700 whp or more. I launch my 4.444 5mt never broken anything.

kimokalihi. I never said that you cant launch a MT.

Im just saying you can launch a AT much easier.

I do love to launch MT's its sort of a lost art really. You dont just rev and dump.

I do it that.

I do lol. But I'm no pro. Rob was nice enough to include launch control so just step on it and let the clutch out however fast you'd like.

kimokalihi Dam! I wish i had that.... I have to use the old school method with my FIC.

Your feet! LOL

Tho im not going to lie here. I love the 6MT.

I just wish it had a lower 6th gear for some real good highway.

0.756 in 6th is not bad

But

0.697 in 4th is better out of the 4eat.

Does anyone know of a highway gear setup for a 6MT.

Im just curious. Its not going to make or break me. I just wondering.

Also coming into play is the final drive is for your tranny. Wouldn't .697 on a 3.9 FD auto tranny have higher freeway revs than .756 on a 3.54 FD 6mt at a given speed?

Unless you're a drag racer, I don't see why anyone would choose a 4EAT over a 6MT...

It really depends on what you plan to do with the car and what you like. If it's a drag car, go with the 4EAT. If you like driving twisty roads, go with the 6spd, or if you are control freak, go with the 6spd. If you are going to daily drive and commute in traffic, go with the 4EAT. So really....it's not a simple answer.

As for the higher 6th gear setup, yes the newer LGT's have a better highway gear setup for 6th gear. The issue is depending on what year 6spd you use, you may need to get the case machined to fit it. I would think the newer 6spds it should be a direct swap or just get a LGT 6spd. The older cases, like mine (2004) would require the machining. I called AndrewTech and asked them how much it'd cost and they said between labor and parts, about $3,000 or so....which is almost as much as the entire trans......so I said no thank you and will live with a little higher revs on the highway.

The other thing to note is that if you go with too new a trans, they no longer have VSS's, since the new cars use the ABS wheel tone sensors for the speed signal.

Legacy777 Are you talking about the 6MT out of a 2010+ legacy GT? Thats one odd duck of a 6MT

I should have said 6MT out of a STi.

I know the newer 6MT NOT the sti 6MT is basically a 5MT with one more gear slapped into the tail housing. O and cable shifted which is kinda cool. I guess you could make a super short throw with that.

There was a few gen. one 6MT in outbacks that needed a hole drilled into the case so fluid would flow there! LOL

I have NO intenstion of uses a new 6MT just the STi 6MT

Yes, the 6spd out of the spec B legacy had the taller 6th gear. I wouldn't suggest using that transmission, just using the 6th gear from that trans. But in order to use it, Andrewtech said there needed to be case machining. I really don't know what....I lost interest when they said it would cost $3,000.
