2nd Gen Legacy/Outback door panels in 1st Gen Legacy?

Post by kookookachew »

Hey guys! New to this forum, but not to Subaru. I just picked up my 3rd the other day and I've begun work on it.

My question today is about the door panels. I know the seats will fit from the '95-'99 Legacy chassis, but how far apart are the door panels? They look like they would attach in a similar manner, but its hard to tell without actually trying.

The interior in this legacy is disgusting from sitting for a long time with a leaky windshield (mold) And so I've just gutted everything but the dash which a good scrubbing with lysol wipes fixed. Now I'm looking to replace everything else. Ideally I'd like to grab the interior from a 2nd gen GT or maybe even an Outback with the cushy leather seats :-D I'd love to be able to pop in door panels and such from another 1st gen, but in my area they are few and far between these days whereas 2nd gens rule the foreign sections of the boneyards...

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Door panels are not gonna happen without some pretty serious custom work.

I've taken door panels off of both first and second gens. They are completely different.

I've taken the door panels off of both now too, and its been a half a year apart or so, but they seemed similar to me... Door handle is in a similar location, they both are held in by a big screw below the arm rest in the center of the panel, they have the same clips around the outside of the door panel, and both "hook on" to the top edge of the door. I also know that the tweeter kits from 2nd gens fit 1st gen doors perfectly, and while the panel attachment isn't exactly the same I was hoping I could make it work without too much trouble...

If I was at home, I could just run to the junkyard, pick one up, check for myself, and then if it was going to be too much effort return it. But I'm at school now and its like a 3 hour trip to the nearest decent junkyard that has a good selection of Subarus

If I am at the junkyard this weekend and have some extra time I will try it and show you why it doesn't work easily.
They do attach in roughly the same way but the mounting hardware is not even close enough to make it work without a lot of modification. Also there would be dash to door panel interference I believe.
