Nasty injectors + compatibility

Post by maria24017 »

So we made is to the $65 carry sale... Got the differential for moms car and I got fuel rails, injectors, coil pack, plug wires, purge solenoid, relay fuses and a set of aluminum subaru rims.. As well as a back seat for my fathers truck, he carried all of it. I know Josh has said that a bad purge solenoid can cause all kinds of crazy problems so I replaced that after spraying it out with some brake cleaner.. I've driven it about 60 miles so far and the code hasn't come back. It had been coding for 2 fuel injectors but now it is only coding for one (and the knock sensor, but we've replaced the wire up to the ECU with no success).

I was about to swap out the fuel rails but when I pulled mine out I realize that the ends of the injectors were sticking out a good bit past the rails, whereas what I pulled off the other car was nearly flush. Are they still compatible? I realized later that the other car was apparently a base FWD wagon, so not sure how much difference that makes.

Here's the thing though, I'm pretty sure that I need to do something about mine ASAP. When I removed the fuel rail (in one piece with the injectors) they were FILTHY , so were the holes that they sit down into. What I got from the junk yard had the smallest amount of brown residue on them.

So I just need to know if I can swap out my rails and injectors with what I got from the junk yard and what I need to do to clean the holes out on the engine (I'm sure there is a technical term for these, I just don't know it :-p )

The injectors on my car have grayish-white plugs and the new ones are red..

Your car is a turbo, yes? If so, then those injectors will probably make your car run lean cause they'll feed less fuel, which is a bad thing. Have you ever run seafoam (injector cleaner, not the crap from the ocean lol) through your fuel system? Ask in the partout threads for injectors

No. Mine is not turbo.

I know what sea foam is. I had about a gallon of gas in my tank and added a bottle if sea foam this morning.. Drove it about 15 miles before adding more gas.

Of mine or the new ones? Or both? Before I take mine back apart my mothers car needs to be finished.. Probably today.

The second injector code came back earlier

For reference, there are four different injectors that were used on the North American 90-94 Legacy

Non-turbo
90-91 MT - Black Body
90-91 AT - Gray Body
92-94 MT & AT - Red Body

Turbo
91-94 MT & AT - Pink Body

Here is a picture of the two different injectors between the 90-91 non-turbo MY's

As the document states, the black & gray injectors are not interchangable.

The red injectors again won't directly fit into the rails of the 90-91 Legacies. You can swap the rails and the engine will run, but it will run slightly rich. I ran into this issue several years ago. However, you can run the 92-94 Legacy JECS ECU, which matches the red injectors and everything will work correctly. This can only be done on the 90-91 AT Legacies because they also have JECS electronics, vs. the MT's Hitachi electronics.

The only difference that I found in wiring between the 90 ECU and the 92-94 ECU is that the AT/MT identifier pin is wired backwards. It's not a big deal and you'd just need to snip the wire going to that pin.

I know there's a bit of info here, but does that make sense?

Makes perfect sense. I guess I will look into testing and possibly rebuilding my current injectors or buy some and sale my "new ones" with the rails

Are injectors from a 93 legacy L a direct fit? My father is going back tomorrow to get front seats for his truck and they just added a '93 L today. The injectors are only $5 each

To make everything work you would need the injectors, fuel rails, and ECU. The only ones that are direct fit into your 90 are the gray injectors found in the 90-91 AT Legacies.

Thanks Josh. They didn't have any other cars that would have been compatable. I looked on car-parts.com and have sent out some inquiries. There are a couple of sets listed for $20 each.
