Shift Solenoid

Post by SubaruLegacy43 »

Hey guys, a while back I diagnosed the power light on my 4EAT and discovered that the shift solenoid 1 or 2 (can't remember which) is faulty. And also when passing, it takes 10 seconds or so for it to drop a gear at full throttle. Does anyone know how hard and how expensive this repair is? Can I do it myself? Thanks for any input!!

The shift solenoids are on the top of the valve body, so you'd have to drop the valve body to replace them. However, before replacing the solenoid, I'd suggest doing some further checks. The factory manual has info on checking the solenoid's resistance and wiring, etc.

I will try and remember to scan those pages from the FSM this evening and post the link. Remind me if I forget.

Figured how to work power mode haha. Works great for passing! But still shows the flashing power light upon starting.

Yeah, probably a good idea to wait until it's warmer :)

Thank you for the input on this thread.

I have a 1993 Subaru Legacy EJ22 with an automatic 4EAT for AWD. I am having issues shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear and will not jump to 4th.

Any of the Chilton or Haynes manual have nothing on diagnosing solenoids. I was wondering if the 4 scanned pages provided on this thread is for this same transmission in diagnosing?

I pulled a valve body off a front wheel drive legacy to use the solenoids if it were to be the solenoids.

Also I was wondering if there is a schematic diagram on which solenoid is for.

Working on helicopters as a living, I understanding finding resources is difficult if planning to fix it ourselves than taking it to a shop and raping $1000-2000 to rebuild a transmission.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Bryan

After searching on a previous thread I have some information from Josh.

http://www.bbs.legacycentral.org/viewto ... =7&t=52751

Maybe my band adjustment screw needs to be turned CCW to allow it to shift from 2nd to 3rd?

"The band is probably worn, so what you can try and do is adjusting that nut slightly a little tighter to compensate for the worn band. If the screw was adjusted 2-1/2 turns originally I would try adjusting it to 2 turns.

If it is too tight it just won't shift from 2 to 3, and will stay in 2nd."

Hi Bryan and welcome to the BBS!

The brake band may be the problem, but since it handles the 2-3 shift it may not be the issue for your 3-4 shift.

As for manuals, you can look through all my factory manual scans on my server. I've tried to preface any scans related to the auto trans with "AT".

Additionally, while this is for the overseas legacy/liberty in Australia the diagrams will be similar enough where it should help for the valve body and determining which solenoids are which. You can grab all the sections, but section 3 is the one with the transmission info.
