Noise when starting the engine (just when cranking finish)

Post by maxdrive3 »

Hi!

This is a Legacy 93
since a year ago there has been a small noise just after cranking, in the exact time when the starter finish and the engine reach is idle speed
when i heard that noise, to my mind came a dry (non lubricated) axe rotating, the similar noise a common desk fan does when is not properly lubed, its like a chirp

but 3-4 day ago the noise is getting longer and louder and now when i turn on the AC the noise come and stay.

please check the video

Check the a/c belt to see if it's loose first, but I think that a/c pump is tired and needs replaced. If you don't use a/c where you live, take the belt off.

What about the starter's bendix gear not retracting fast enough or at all? I think that happened to my old setup, but it didn't continue after the engine got up to idle.

Well the noise when the AC is on is definitely related to the AC compressor. The bearing in the clutch assembly is probably toast. You can try turning the clutch assembly by hand when the engine is off. If it turns ok, then it's probably the clutch assembly vs. the compressor inards.

You can remove the AC belt and see if the noise continues during start up. That will let you know whether the start up noise is the same issue or not.
