Free 02 wrx trans or $250 1994 legacy 5speed swap?

Post by Sidewayssubaru »

I have a free wrx 5 speed with everything to do the swap or a guy locally is selling a 1994 legacy 5 speed trans for $250. How much harder/more involved would the wrx 5 speed be to swap into my auto 1994 sedan?

It would be the same thing. You'll need a rear diff that matches the final drive of the tranny you choose.

Ok I didn't know if the pedals would bolt up easier or the trans comp would make it easier.

So you're saying either transmission comes with a set of pedals? Some people have struggled to get the newer pedal sets into our cars, I didn't have that issue. But you could use the wrx transmission with a turbo legacy pedal set, or a legacy trans with a wrx pedal set, etc.

I will tell you that the revised syncro design on the newer one will make it a way nicer driver. Strength of either box should be about the same, because they didn't widen the 1-3rd gears till the later 2003 wrxs.

You didn't clarify whether your 94 Legacy was turbo or not and whether the 94 Legacy donor transmission is turbo or not. That little bit of information is critical in my eyes.

Mine is a turbo and the 1994 trans is a NA.

Unless the wrx transmission is bad, it's a no-brainer to use that one.

Agree with Mike since the 94 non-turbo uses a completely different clutch setup.

cable trans: cheaper to buy/replace, easy to find, easier to install and set up, no hydraulics to screw around with, however they have fewer options for a strong clutch and the pedal feel is maybe not as good as hydraulic.
