legacy to impreza engine swap?

Post by RacerX »

Im not sure if this has allready been covered but, I was wondering if a Ej22t could be swaped into an impreza AWD of particularly the earliest years? And if it fits would there be any mechanical problems such as power loss or the drive shaft not being able to handle the hp etc?

I was wondering about this too. I have an '02 Impreza TS I'd like to drop my EJ22t into when the legacy's body gives out. My biggest concern was wiring harnesses and the ECU. the dash gauges also.
IggDawg is cool.

It can be done and it is not as hard as you would first think. The Turbo Legacy front crossmember must be used it will bolt right in. The exhaust is close to bolt in. I installed a '99 GT transmission but the turbo Legacy will bolt in and you will have to add a clutch master cyl and probably a pedal assy from any hydraulic clutch car but I have seen some pedal assy's that will work with both cable and hyd. My car was a I.8lt engine model and I replaced one plug in the engine compartment ( junk yard) and at the computer end I removed the terminals from the three green plugs and inserted them into four yellow plugs (junk yard) and then ran extra wires for the knock sensor, pressure sensor, pressure sensor power and ground and the switching solenoid. Some cars use a oil lite and some use a gauge the the lite type sending unit will blow the gauge all other instruments worked ok. I have the diagrams for all of these engines and cars and would share if someone wanted to do this project.

I would think you could just swap the whole harness in if you wanted to. With the engine out and the dash out, it would be easy enough. I would also swap the brakes. Hmmm and I always did like the old WRX..... I'm sure I can find one with a blown motor or tranny cheap.....

The first problem with swapping the harness is that the harness on the turbo Legacy takes two routes back to the ECU that also is mounted in a different location. I pulled one of these one time and it was about three times as long as needed and had what the factory called a "super Monster Junction" in one of the cables where all of the wires changed color. There was a place in CA that was shortening these harnesses for $440.00 but they no longer do it. I was offered the job and I told them $750.00 ea. They went away. But if you find one of these at a price you want to pay you will have to start by removing the dash, heaterbox, AC box and a lot of wiring to get it through the firewall. I can show you the invoice on the one I did like this it had a price tag of $2100.00 but I did a nice job :D

Well, than the few wires you had to run sounds better.

I think so pulling the dash and all of the heater, AC, and part of the wiring is a real nightmare it's all entangled with the frame behind the dash. We have one sitting around where they tried to change to a later model dash and it has been sitting for almost a year.
What I did was make a small hole in the rubber boot where the wiring harness goes through the firewall and after a few tries got one wire down behind the heater. I then used this wire to pull the needed wires through.
I used some sheilded wire for the knock and pressure sensor and regular wire for the others and while I was at it pulled in a few extras for any new "goodies" that I might want to add later. I looked around and found the1.8 ECU pinouts where I have marked the colors of the wires and if it is a 1.8 that you are dealing with this would help. Let me know if you would like a copy it is factory stuff so I don't tink we should post it
