What's the purpose of the chimney? Is it just extra weight? Being a N/A guy, I don't have the luxury of stepping outside to investigate for myself. ( because I'm turboless)

The chimney stack fits/surrounds the stock turbo. There is an associated baffle piece that connects around the stock hood scoop.
The design was that cool air being drawn in from the hood scoop will help cool the turbo during driving.
When the car is stopped and/or sitting/turned off. The heat will rise up through the stack/baffle and out the hood scoop, which has the potential to reduce under hood temperatures.
Interesting. So why remove it? The only guess I've got is those guys are running bigger turbos, and they don't fit? So the hood scoop was functional on the stock cars, even though they didn't have a TMIC? I'm impressed!
Thanks Josh! No more scratching my head!
