starting problems

I have a 1991 Subaru legacy sport auto. My question
has to do with starting the vehicle. Some times when I
start it. Usually when it has sat over night or for
several hours when I turn the key it starts almost
instantly probably within 1 sec. BUT some times it
wont start up unless I hold the key for 3-4 seconds..
And thats usually when its already warmed up and
maybe sat for an hour or 2. It isnt always like this
sometimes in the morning it does take 3-4 seconds.
(This is all without the gas pedal) Anyone have any
idea what might be causing this?

Thanks!
John

Hi John,
I have a 1992 Subaru Liberty manual wagon ( same as Legacy ). I
found that it wasn't a good starter from cold too but if I turn the ignition
on and just give it a couple seconds before starting it starts much better.
Maybe it needs time for the fuel pump to pressurise?

I used to have problems with mine, but my coolant temp sensor was
giving me a CEL and replacing it made it start better and no CEL.

It could be a weak fuel pump, but i'm going with the simpler fix :D

I had the exact same symtoms on my 1994 Legacy Turbo Sedan. It
eventually went away, and I attribute that to one of two things. We
moved from Summit County, Colorado (elev. 9,600 feet) to Houston,
Texas (elev. 100 feet). That might have solved it. So my question to
you would be, "do you live 'at altitude?'". In any case, I don't know
why one is any better that the other.

The second thing that happened, at exactly the same time, was I found
a "suction" or "air pressure" type hose disconnected in the engine
compartment. This also caused "lurching" since the ECU went into safe-
mode, I think. Anyway, reconnected it, didn't even bother with an ECU
reset, and it worked fine. And has for over a year since.

Good luck,

Jim

I find this very interesting, Only one of my Subaru's has trouble
starting and that is my new Subaru (automatic), and only first thing
in the morning on a cold morning. When I turn the key the car doesn't
rev up to 1500 - 2000 rpm and hunts for about 5 seconds then revs up
if it hasn't stalled. When turning the key and hold the key in the
start position about a second longer the starter motor gives the
engine slightly more revs and the car starts fine.

I wonder if it is the auto Subarus that are worse, because I know of
so many auto cars that stall upon first starting or when you put the
car in gear.
