is there any oil seals between the outer belt covers on the front of
an ej22t engine? my legacy has been leaking oil from what appears to
be pinched gaskets around the belt covers(timing belt), left top and
right bottom. or is this the front main seal? what kind of price
would i expect to pay a mechanic for replacind these? it keeps
getting worse and worse so any help would be great before i drive the
thing into a wall.... sorry it really smokes from the oil dripping
and it's very annoying.

oh yeah, one last thing, i looked all through my haynes manual and
can't seem to find anything relavent to this except the camshaft oil
seals. could they be the culprits?

Mike,

Sounds likely. Obviously I haven't looked at your car, or pulled it apart -
so take this for what it's worth. Supposedly, if you do schedualed
maintenence you're supposed to replace those every other time you do the
timing belt. The gasket in question could concievably be leaking oil from
the camshaft. As for the burning, the only thing I can think of, it's
finding its way down inside, between the plastic housing, down behind the
housing, under the engine, and onto the exhaust manifold. There's no place I
can think of on the front of that engine that could produce enough heat...
oh, it's a turbo, may be the heads could heat up enough to burn that oil, I
dunno, kinda doubt it actually. I can see why it would be annoying,
especially everytime you turned on the air vents, or the heater.

If you do the job, here's what you are looking at:

1. Remove timing belt camshaft sprockets, and related parts (I can field
strip mine and put it back together in ~50 minutes. I also have the FHI
reccomended camshaft and crankshaft wrenches. If you are new to doing this,
it'll prolly take you longer b/c you'll want to seperately identify/mark
every set of bolts you pull off and potentially a couple trips to Sears for
a missing socket size, or a breaker bar/extension, stripped bolt, etc.)

2. Remove valve rocker assembly (or don't, I think you might be able to skip
that step, I could be magnificently wrong but you'll know if you'll need to
pull it or not when you get to step 4. FHI reccomends pulling it, but it's
such a bear to put back in, especially on the right side... You might be
able to get away with just loosening the thing to the max. There are very
specific directions on re-tightening these things so if you need the
information on that lemme know.)
2. A. Remove the oil level gauge guide & attaching bolt.

3. Remove cam angle sensor

4. Remove camshaft support (on turbo, right side, it has 4 bolts, on NA's it
has 2. On the left side, both the turbos and the NA's have 3 bolts. FHI
documentation is not conclusive as to wether you have to pull this thing to
replace the oil seal IMHO. I'd try and leave it in if you can to prevent
issue mentioned in step 2.)

5. Remove O-ring (replace)

6. Remove oil seal (replace) [You may need to use specific tools to get this
thing in correctly, FHI reccomends using the oil seal guide pn# 499597000
and the oil seal installer pn# 499587100, and a mallet. This is prolly to
make sure the seal gets the right fit in the camshaft support]

Eat lunch, gather all the kings horses, and all the kings men, go back into
the garage, and put it all back together...

I've never done this specific job before, but I've replaced the head gaskets
on both sides of my engine, which requires one to do everything to the head,
except replace those 2 seals. I'm due for this exact same job when I do my
next timing belt sometime next summer - so let us know how it goes!

Now that I just re-read your question:

Those gaskets (if they are the one I'm thinking of) have *nothing* to do
with keeping oil in, mostly they just keep grime & dust away from the
camshaft. If it's meant to keep oil in the engine, without looking under my
own hood, You can't likely see it. Mine look pinched too because they are a
little tricky to keep in place when reassembling the plastics if you don't
have someone helping you out.

Price? No idea. $75/hr X 3-5 hours depending on experience of the tech. The
parts are less than $50 me thinks.

And that Haynes manual is more valuable to Subaru dealerships than it is to
Subaru owners, according to most of the mechanics I've asked about it. More
than one has said that if you follow their directions you'll end up doing
more damage than good on a couple of their replacement instructions...
Hence, I bought the FHI manuals.

hehe, so... basically i should reschedule my plans for the next few
days after i decide to tackle this one eh? no really thanks though
for the help. i'm still undecided about if i'm going to try this or
if i should let it up to a garage. both decisions have their pros
and cons. i'm not too shabby with a wrench but then again it does
sound pretty involved. i'd just hate to get it apart and get stuck
at some point. as for the haynes being more a pain than anything,
well yeah, it pretty much cost my a control arm so far. how much is
a FHI manual, and where do you pick them up? well, thanks again.

Mike,

I got mine at www.subaruparts.com

They _are_ the most comprehensive manuals on our cars you will find
anywhere - guaranteed.

That value, comes at a price. I thinks I paid $100 for mine, they might be
cheaper by now. There is no worry about ordering things over the web from
subaruparts.com because they are a dealership, not some stupid internet
startup that might let you down. If you have a problem, call them up, get a
warm body, they have always been very easy to deal with in my experiences
with them. I bought the whole set: electronic, engine, body, general,
mechanical, and tranny.

There's nothing technically challenging to the job, if the oil seal is the
problem (figuring out what is wrong is half the battle). It's just a lot of
teardown and a quick replacement, then the re-construction. There's no parts
to machine, resurface, test, measure, etc. It's just taking things apart and
putting them back together (correctly). If you get it wrong, the worst thing
that's going to happen - you spend 2 Saturdays instead of 1 on the job,
re-doing it. Unless, you are a total block-head, like *ahem* me, who spent 3
straight days doing his first timing belt replacement, and eventually took
it to the shop b/c I couldn't count the teeth on the belt... I can make fun
of myself can't I? 42, 43, 45, 46....Oops! "That will be $120 please."

Next time spend a $1.20 on the grease marker. That's the lesson I learned on
that one...

What's really funny about that is: (I'm being candid here...) I didn't get
it wrong once, or even twice, or even four times - I actually botched it
five times in a row! Moron...

The next time I did the belt I _am_ proud to say, I got it right on the
first try. I picked up some tricks/hints from Mike and the fellas at Smart
Service Subaru :o) I now have it permanently burned into my mind how to
replace a timing belt on the BC-BF Legacy.

If you get in a jam, just query the forum. Do a search on 'timing belt' if
you want to read up on that part of the job.

Again, good luck, and tell us how it went!

outer belt covers...

Mike,

The biggest challenge you face is removing the camshaft pulley. That SOB is
a tricky one to get at w/o a camshaft wrench. The problem stems from the
fact there is almost nothing you can use to hold it in place when you are
trying to bust it loose. I have been thinking about this, and if you get the
timing belt covers off - *but don't remove the timing belt* - you might be
able to lock up the engine, via method of your choice, and get that nut
loose. Then proceed with the rest of the belt removal (easy) and then
re-address the camshaft sprocket you loosened just before. I ordered a
wrench b/c I didn't want to monkey around with it. Figuring out where to
order one is a trick. I had to cajole the info out of the head mechanic at
the Subie dealership in Bellevue, WA. I think I posted some info about this
previously on the board... I'm headed out to work and I don't have the info
handy - otherwise I'd tell ya.

As for TDC. Just line up the marks. There is a mark on each of the camshaft
sprockets, and the plastic housing behind them at 12 o'clock. Make sure you
use a grease pencil and mark the belt BEFORE you take it off. The new belts
have the marks already on them for you. The Crankshaft is a tricky one
however, the mark isn't as obvious as it is on the Cams, but it's there. The
cams are marked on the front lip, the crank is on the back, and it lines up
with a mark on the block, just after 12 o'clock. Instead of a notch, it's a
little bump on the crank sprocket. Mark the bump, cuz there's a few of them
on there, mark the belt where they line up with the notches, make arrows
pointing to the U.S. Driver's side for direction. Then yank the thing by
removing the tensioner and/or maybe an idler. When you go to put it back on,
line up your marks, put the tensioner/idler or both back in BUT DON"T YANK
THE PIN YET! Make damn sure you have the thing in there right - here's what
you do for a double check:

>From the crank mark count _teeth_ (not notches) in the belt to the right (as
you are facing the engine w/ your knees on the bumper) all the way to the
next mark. Should be 40.5 teeth (not notches). Do the same in the other
direction and you should have 44 teeth (not notches). If it all checks out
AND you have the tensioner in there right (there's a trick to that one too)
then yank the pin and slap the rest of the plastics, belts, and fans in
place and hit the ignition. See what you get.

As for the tensioner, when you put it back in place, put it in there loose
(like free moving) when you start the re-assembly. You'll need the slop to
get the belt in correctly. When you get everything just about right, as in
BEFORE you yank the pin, get a fairly hefty screwdriver in behind it, and
force the thing as hard toward the pulley as possible, then tighten that
thing down. NOW count your teeth on the belt and if everything checks out,
yank the pin. If you botch this, you will have a loose belt that will wear
out considerably faster, and/or potentially risking harm to the engine.

Wha-la! No timing lights, no compression gauges.

One other thing, make sure the crankshaft sprocket nut is tightend to no
less than 93 newton/meters, and no more than 103 newton/meters. I aim for
100. If you botch this, you will have a very big suprise one day when the
tooth on the sprocket breaks. Jason Grahn has been witness to the aftermath
of one of these... not pretty, very expensive.

Mike-

Get a set of Subaru Factory Service Manuals and toss those Haynes ones,
they're crap. The Subaru ones are VERY accurate.

=)

ok, one last question for ya, what is the easiest way to find the TDC
for the #1 cylinder? is it as easy as aligning the mark on the
pulley with the zero on the timing scale or do i have to go through
the whole compression guage in the #1 spark plug hole and
disconecting the ignition coil pack and fuel pump and everything?
oh, and also can you give me a rundown of what "special" tools i
might need? i have a very good, pretty complete set of wrenches and
sockets from craftsman so that shouldn't be a problem. thanks again.

ha.... no... i wish. i'm waiting around for my check from the
irs... yeah you know, the one that was supposed to be $300. well
until i get that i'm up a creek. i have however found a guy to do
the whole timing belt and seals for me for aroun 75-100 dollars,
that's just the labor. i told him i'd get the belt and seals. i
figure that's not too bad, all together i'll be paying around $143.
he's a pretty good mech. and friend so i'm sure it'll be done right
also. i also might ask if he'd knock a bit off the labor end if i
helped. at any rate though i'm still waiting for that darn check.
and until then i'll be keeping an eye on my oil.... thanks for
asking though.

oh, one last thing, i'm a little confused on the oil pump housing
gasket and i think it was the crankshaft gasket. well it says in my
haynes(yeah i know) under the section for changing the crankshaft
seal to remove the gasket, but it called it the pump housing gasket
and i was wondering if these are one in the same or two entirely
different gaskets? just need to know what all i should pick up from
advanced auto before my suby is in pieces and i'm stranded.

outer belt covers...

Mike,

I'm on the way out the door, but the job you listed below is entirely
different than the one you originally posted about. Now you are talking
about doing the gasket on the oil pump, before, it sounded like you wanted
to do the camshaft oil seal. That's another story - I haven't been there
before. I just picked up the FHI manual and it says it's fairly straight
forward - remove, replace, re-assemble. But nothing makes up for experience
and I haven't done this one myself...yet.

I'll do a write up on what FHI has to say when I get home from work.

=Sambo

P.S. forget renting the chain wrench. The timing belt on Sube's is exactly
that: a belt.

sambo- ya know what, i was just sitting here reading the posts you so
painstakingly wrote for me on how to change my seals and i've finally
decided it.... i'm going to save myself a few bucks and change these
suckers myself, now hopefully my local autozone has a chain wrench i
can rent;) thanks a bunch, i'll let ya know how it turns out.

oh, one last thing, i'm a little confused on the oil pump housing
gasket and i think it was the crankshaft gasket. well it says in my
haynes(yeah i know) under the section for changing the crankshaft
seal to remove the gasket, but it called it the pump housing gasket
and i was wondering if these are one in the same or two entirely
different gaskets? just need to know what all i should pick up from
advanced auto before my suby is in pieces and i'm stranded.

outer belt covers...

Correct. The oil pump drives off the crankshaft. It's right behind the cog.

You have to pull the oil pump. It's basically shaped like a horseshoe, or an
upside down letter "U". (I need to go get a scanner...) and the crank runs
directly through the arch. After removing the 7 bolts (remember this is from
FHI), you'll need a couple of screwdrivers to get behind it and lever it off
the engine block (careful: don't scratch the block). Drain the engine oil
first (duh). Drain the coolant (not sure why, but that's what it says).
Remove the belt covers & belts. Remove the water pump (not sure about that
one either). Then remove the oil pump.

FHI emphasises: Be careful not to scratch mating surfaces of cylinder block
and oil pump.

You'll need some "goup" or that weird sticky packing fluid to re-pack the
mating surfaces.

FHI also emphasises: Apply liquid packing to oil pressure switch threads
before installation. (I don't know what that means either because there is
no such definition in any of the pictures here as to what that switch is,
but they stated it for a reason).

This looks like a slightly complex proceedure... It also states: "inscribe
alignment marks on inner and outer rotors so that they can be replaced in
their original positions during reassembly. (those are the guts of the thing
FYI. They are round and bumpy.)

More FHI emphasis: Before removing the relief valve, loosen plug when
removing oil pump from cylinder block.

So you'll need to order an

O-ring
Front oil seal

And depending on what you find when you get there: an oil seal installer,
same as mentioned in previous posts...

Hope that helps...

-Sambo

by mike p.

swaybar endlinks :) hopefully soon though... i'll let you know, or
maybe(hopefully not) have to ask you a question or two if i get
stuck. one thing though, when you did yours(i'm assuming yours) did
you have to take the bumper off or did you have room to work(again
hopefully not)? i just hope everything goes ok...

no i'm still waiting for my belt and seals.... and my whiteline
swaybar endlinks :) hopefully soon though... i'll let you know, or
maybe(hopefully not) have to ask you a question or two if i get
stuck. one thing though, when you did yours(i'm assuming yours) did
you have to take the bumper off or did you have room to work(again
hopefully not)? i just hope everything goes ok...

outer belt covers...

by mike p.
will do, i'm expecting some spectacular results just for the fact
that mine are shot, to say the least. every time i make a turn or
hit a bump etc. you can hear the front left one(it make a loud click
kinda noise) and just recently the right one started. oh, boy i
can't wait:) i also have my gr2's sitting here ready to go on.
hopefully i'll get everything on in one shot. i have to come up with
some money to rent some tools though(spring compressor, and chain
wrench for my crankshaft, cam/crank seals and timing belt are also
getting replaced) boy, i got some work to do eh? :)
