Someone once told me that Stromung is the way to go for gains. They are not too loud at all either. Ive heard them on a few imprezas and I was impressed. These were all N/A.

There's so few of us that have exhaust I think you'll have a hard time finding someone who's actually recorded their exhaust. I wish I could help you out, that'd mean I'd have exhaust. Sorry :(

stromong is way overpriced IMO.......I wouldn't expect tons more gains then another performance muffler.

The best muffler is NO muffler. Or at least something that is completely straight through... if you feel the need to have one.

running without a muffler is illegal and it is WAY too loud. i don't even like the sound either, it drones on the freeway and pops too much.

Agreed. My friends whimpy V6 camaro runs no muffler and it sounds like crap. It pops all day. I ran my NA w/o a muffler for a day. Just for kicks. It was great for the first 5 mins. Way too loud and robbed my low end like a cat burglar in a home for the blind.

Hmmm.... title seems to imply that we were talking about turbos. A Ford Aspire without a muffler could shatter glass... that's nothing impressive. A turbo engine that naturally lends itself to a nice sound is something completely different.

It is soooo much different on a turbo. Loud, but with the cats it's not too bad. :D I ran no muffler on my GL-10 turbo with the cats for about a year, then went catless 2.25in. I did put a muffler on, without the cats it was too loud for me. I like the Magnaflow straight through mufflers, that is what is going on when I get exhaust.

A turbo is a restriction (sound-deadener) in the exhaust, the only reason it's beneficial is because the boost increases power FAR more than the restriction decreases it...

My friend's Grand National runs two straight pipes and it sounds absolutely heavenly

I spent $7 at Pep Boys and made my own custom pipe and went mufferless on my NA. I retained everything else and I think it sounds really good. It rumbles when needed but is real quite when cruising speed (which is important since I drive 10 miles of interstate to work). My brother in law had a 92 SVX with straight pipes, not cats or mufflers and that thing was just obnoxiously loud. My sister refused to drive it after a while and they traded it in for and Audi which they had for 6 months until they traded it for an Outback.

brat4by4, i just ran my legacy turbo without a muffler for five days and hated it. i put the stock back on today. without it, yeah, it sounds alrights, but on de-acceleration, it is loud. on the freeway, at 70mph, you can hear it. it just gets annoying.

i decided, i am going to do a stealth back. i am going to run a 2.5inch catless exhaust but keep the stock muffler.

Grant, what kind of piping did you get from the auto parts store?

If it was the corrugated stuff that you can bend easily, that alone would probably provide a small muffling effect.

I have a adapter to go from the stock 2" outer diameter to about 2.25" o.d. and then a 43" piece of the bendable pipe. I was going to bend it and follow the stock placement of the muffler and do a small muffler but decided to just run it straight. The coorugated does muffle it some but mostly in the car. It fell off the first day and so I drove around for a little while without it and it seemed just as loud outside with or without it. Obviously it was much louder in the car without it.

Aaron, don't run the stock muffler, please. It is easy enough to get a good muffler that isn't too loud and looks stock.

I have a 3" turbo back Brullen, 3" was not my choice, it was installed by Brullen that way.

It is a quiet setup, two resonators, one highflow cat, and one muffler.

It is nice, burbly at idle and then at wot, a bit of noise, deep and full.

Hard to explain, but 600 times better than any fart can honda.

Why?
does it bother you?

totech, yeah, i can agree that you setup would be quiet cause you are running a cat, two resonators and a muffler. it makes a big difference in how loud things get.

It is very bad for power. Why run a 2.5in pipe all the way back with a very restrctive muffler on the end.

So, it will be quiet!!!!!
why else?
it is not going to reduce much power anyway, most gains are going to be from the bigger bellmouth downpipe and bigger midpipe, a high flow muffler is only going to get you about another 5hp. not a big deal.
besides, many wrx guys are running a turboxs "stealthback" and can still make plenty of power with a stock muffler.

Pick up a use WRX muffler then, good for your power yet VERY low sound! Plus they can be had cheap and fit with minor modification.

why? my stock legacy turbo muffler is probably just as restrictive as a wrx muffler. oh, and why do you say "good for your power" ?

The wrx muffler would be new, large inlet yet still totally capable on vehicles with 230hp and be a subaru OEM part preventing smog troubles.

I disagree that the WRX muffler would be as restrictive.

Are you being hostile in your post? I didnt intend any hard feelings.
