Well. It makes you wonder how some people make it in life, but with all the safety nuts natural selection just isn't what it used to be :)

Tell me about it......even when I was growing up.....things weren't all luvy duvy as they are now.......

There's a reason natural selection works in the animal kingdom......why do we feel we can change it....haha

I recently had a similar experience! There is a signature Subaru store near my house. At a signature store they only sell Subaru's... so you would think they know a thing or two about them.

So I'm describing a part I need for my RS's transmission, which I describe as a '98 manual RS.

She says " 2 doors or 4 "
They only made 2 doors in '98
She says " Thats a 2200cc right "
No.. thats the whole point of an RS, its 2500cc
She says " Is it a Brighton, L, or LE?"
Okay really.. its an RS. But she argued that her computer didn't give her the option for an RS in '98. Yeesh. So I told her to look up a '97 Legacy 2.5 GT w/ a manual. She told me that that didn't exist either. Wow.

Absolutely unbelievable! With all of our knowledge of Subaru's, WE should be working at the parts departments laying the smack down on these morons

When I asked my local dealer about how much springs cost (out of curiosity):

"What year?"
"1993."
"Model?"
"Legacy Turbo."
"Sedan or wagon?"
"Sedan."
"Sunroof?"

Yes. He asked if I had a sunroof. Without even batting an eye.

I gave him a funny look, and he realized what he had just asked. We both laughed and he turned the computer screen around for me. It was asking whether or not I had a sunroof before it would give part numbers for springs!

I think this was before it got to the question about aspiration, so our guess was maybe sunroof-equipped Legacies were all built in Japan or something, and the computer was doing some clever cross-referencing.

He input that yes, I had a sunroof, and the next question was whether I had a turbo, and then it gave him the part number.

I thought all subarus were built in Japan until they opened the Indiana plant in 95 or 96?

I'm pretty sure my old '91 Legacy was built in Indiana.

I do know that my '92 electrical manual has different wiring diagrams for models built in Japan and in the US, so the Indiana plant has definitely been around at least that long.

The wiring diagrams might be different, but that might be because of the different engines, too? I'm not arguing with ya, I just could've sworn the Indiana plant was built after the BC series legacies . . . I could be wrong, though.

Nevermind:

"The 2.3 million-square foot facility performs all integrated operations from stamping to final assembly. The annual phase 1 production of 60,000 Subaru Legacys and 60,000 Isuzu pickups and Rodeos began on September 11, 1989. The plant was officially dedicated on October 16, 1989 with a week long grand opening ceremony."

It's in your VIN. My VIN starts with a 4, so it's built in the USA, in the Indiana plant, which is signified on my radiator support on the A/C recharge label. If your VIN starts with a J, then it's made in Japan...

Interesting: So it was made in Japan, BC6 body style, and I think it was no. 7346 made, correct? Anything else you can decipher from the VIN?

You would be floored by what you can tell from the VIN.

The parts book I have has crazy info on VIN numbers. I'll take a look at the info when I get home....

I remember being able to read this out of my VIN: 1993 model year, made by FHI in Japan, BC body style, 2.2 liter engine, "GT/RS" level, 4WD, 5-speed manual, automatic seat belts, driver airbag, and the car's serial number.

GT/RS level? So what is a USDM turbo legacy designation? SS?

The USDM Turbo Legacy is at the "GT/RS" level. The other levels were something like "base/L," "Outback," etc.

Yes, its underway. New motor etc.

Cool, I will hope to see you there. I will be crewing for Total Motorsport. They are just building a 2004, 2003, and a 2002 WRX and they built the first Mini for rally competition in Canada.
