What do you mean? The temp it's supposed to open? If you're in question of it being bad or not. Just replace it. It's like 6 bucks. I must tell you too, buy the OEM one from the dealer. It's pretty much the same price, and will save you headaches. The aftermarket ones you get at the auto parts stores are smaller, and will close when you rev the engine, and cause you hell. So just get the OEM one and a gallon of antifreeze, do a flush and 50/50 mix, and you're good to go.

pot of boiling water. If it doesn't open its no good, if it opens
then its fine. Are you noticing something that is pointing to a
faulty thermostat or are you simply very preventive maintenance
minded. I just changed the thermo on my 535i because it was stuck
open. Now I have heat!

I'm getting 13mpg... checked the ecu...it gave the code for thermo and 02. Changed the 02 but its still giving those code after reset. I hope its the thermo... nice $10 fix!

Don't even bother, the part is very cheap - which is dependant on your
defininition of the word. But I consider myself only slightly less
conservative than Scroodge himself. I can dig out the info if you have to
know, but honestly it's a very inexpensive part.
