Subaru Powered rock cralwer!

Post by skulltoy »

I am new here and thought I would show you guys the Subaru powered rock buggy we are building. We will be using it to compete in the UROC rock crawling series. (click the link if you don't know what rock crawling is) As far as we know this is the first Subaru rock buggy built!

Specs are 2.2L Subaru
GM Powerglide tranny
Dana 300 transfer case
9" ford front and rear axles
Full Chromalloy chassis and cage

We have comps. this year in Farmington, twice, cedar city, and then either Vegas or Reno. If you live in those areas come check us out! And be sure to root for the Sooby!

Nice. What do you have in the way of exhaust?

We are using a borla header muffler, with a header that we built. It dumps out right next to the engine on the drivers side. You can sort of see it in the first picture, I posted. Here is another picture of it during the buildup, but do to fittament problems it has now been moved to the drivers side.

I still find it verry amazing that Subaru boxer motors are used in everything from Rally car's to Air planes. That is the first I have seen the motor in a rock climber though. I have seen them in the backs of old VW Bugs. It's amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it.

I have owned both a NA and turbo EJ22. the Torque below 2500rpm are almost the same. Imagine if the engine is on a kit car, not a 3000lbs family hauler.

Any links to airplanes with EJ22?

For airplane stuff just go to http://www.google.com and search for EJ22. Almost everything you find is airplane stuff. This was how I first discovered that many airplanes are using our engine. They do some pretty cool things with them to extract power too. I guess if your building something to take you into the sky you want something reliable. I bet there aren't many Dodge Neon powered airplanes out there. Sorry to any Neon enthusiasts :D

Tisk tisk tisk.... its too bad your not into airplane pylon racing or youd have never made that statement  The super lite class uses mildly moddified 420A's for power (Neon DOHC 2.0). The reason being is simply weight. Its actully a fairly light engine and pretty forgiving to work on. they run about 200hp in the form used for racing and those lil planes will hit over 200mph on the striats.
All kinds of cars but none of them run.

Sweet! I crawl with an old Toyota (dual t-cases, blah blah blah). Nice work. How have the competitions gone for you?

I do have a line on a 2.2/2.5 supercharger setup but it is preproduction. Should be a few more months and be ready to hit the market.
