how can I tell if my legacy is AWD or FWD?

Post by f13ndus »

Ok, so this is a94 NA Legacy I've been driving for a while. My dad
told me it was ABS and AWD. It's obviously not ABS (There's no ABS
module, and I don't think it would work without THAT), and I'm
starting to wonder about it's claim to AWD... today I took it to be
tested for emissions, and they had to perform an idle test, as they
said I couldn't use it on the rollers because it was AWD... now, I
said that I would put in the FWD fuse and they said ok, so I pop the
hood, look to where it's supposed to be, and I can't find the damn
thing... so they do the idle test anyway... but whatever, so I get
home, spend about 30 minutes looking for the damn connector and can't
find it ANYWHERE. Hence my suspicion that the car is, in fact, a FWD
model. Is there any way I can check the VIN to see if it really is or
if I'm just stupidly not seeing the connector? Does anyone have a
picture of THEIR FWD connector so I can see where it is on your car
and check again?

Ditto what Fred said. Just look underneath. You will see rear diff, driveline, axles, etc if it is AWD. I'm assuming you have an automatic correct? If not, you will have no AWD fuse. I have heard of one or two instances where someone could not find the AWD fuse.

As for your ABS, up by the intake you will see a little thing sitting there with a bunch of tubing goin into it. That is your ABS stuff. If there is not one there, then you don't have ABS. Again, you can try this...when it is wet, just stomp on the brakes. If it sits there and slides along you don't have ABS. If the pedal sits there and pulsates, and doesn't skid....you do have ABS.

First of all I appologize for my bad english, I´m
Sweden you know. Back to the question, I guess you are
driving an automatic?(here in Sweden we have them
both)If you aren't..well then you don´t have the
"fuse-box" :) The easy way to see if you have AWD is
to look if you have the rear wheels attached. Or drive
to a parkinglot with some mud and spin your wheels,
then count how many tracks you have. And are you sure
you don´t have ABS, break hard(on slippery road) and
you will feel alittle tickle under your foot.
Thats all folks.

Yeah, I already know it doesn't have ABS because the thingy (whatever
it's called) isn't there. I'll check to see if it's an AWD or not,
and I don't think it is. Which sucks, because it was sold to us by
the dealer as an AWD car. they SPECIFICALLY STATED that it was an AWD
car. And if they hadn't been bought up and closed, I could have a
nice lawsuit to get a new 2002 WRX. :)

I've also noticed that Subarus from that period proudly display AWD
and ABS on the back if present :)

My '91 legacy wagon has a 'full-time 4wd' plate next to my steering
wheel. On the rear it says 'GT 4wd', and ABS is easy.. just slam on
the brakes :) (safely in a parking lot or something when nobody is
behind you)

OK, alot of good information flying around! AWD is very simple to test,
simply try to spin the front tires (on wet pavement). If it is difficult
to do you have AWD. If its simple to do you have FWD. 2 1/4 cents :-)

Hi Iain,

If you read my previous e-mail you will find how you know the
difference between the AWD and 4WD auto models.

The fuse is ONLY available on the auto models, if you have a look at
the photo's section I have posted a shot of the fuse holder, I have
called it fuse holder.
