More Advice on Ben Lam's Engine Update

Post by ssspoon@aol.com »

Hi Ben,

I've been thinking about your engine update question some more. I have already advised that you should replace or rebuild your EJ22T engine. I'm sure you know I wouldn't bullshit you, because you know I'm looking for EJ22T parts, and going to another engine could make some parts available to me, but I still recommend sticking with the 22T.

But like I said I've been thinking, and I finally realize why you keep asking. I'm an old fart with a wife and a daughter. I've gone conservative in my old age. You have been asking, but we haven't been hearing. We (or I) have been giving you the answer that's best for us, but not for you. You probably have buds with Integra engines in their Hondas going, "Hey Ben, when are you gonna get a cool engine for that 'Roo?" You have probably been seduced by a sexy lady with double overhead cams. Hey, I can't knock that, It's happened to me! Just be prepared to spend more to make it work, but you know that.

So you have to not ask us, what's best for you. You have to ask you what's best for you. If an easy EJ22T to EJ22T swap is not as important as having those dual cams, a bigger turbo, an intercooler, and all the cool stuff the factory hung on the EJ20T, then getting equal or more power from the EJ22T is not going to do it for you. It won't matter that you can put all the stuff on the EJ22T and produce more power if you want the prestige that goes with a swap. Anything can be done if your mechanic is sharp enough and/or you throw enough money at the project.

My last choice is a normally aspirated engine. Yes you can boost it, and initially a lower boost level will result in more power because of the higher stock compression ratio, but ultimately that will limit your boost and power potential if, like most hot rodders, you want more.

My second choice is the EJ20T, which I think is really your first choice, and once the install is successful, it will already have everything you need.

As for first choices, you already know what my first choice is.

In either case other than staying with the EJ22T, you need more than the engine. Hopefully you can get the intake and exhaust manifolds because they may be different. And I cannot stress enough how important it is to get, not only a compatible ECU but also the wiring harness. The ECU without a harness could result in a mismatch with the plugs which will leave you as bad off as with no ECU.

Good luck, and let us know what you decide
