2nd gear synchro?

Post by subaruguy »

well my 2nd gear synchro is going out/is out, it happened today when downshiftting to stop at a light. how much will I be spending on a rebuild. or should I just get a new/used tranny from overseas or something. will a 5mt from a wrx fit?....update there is also a slight grinding noise when im shifting through the gears and its there when im in nuetral. it speeds up a little when I rev the engine what the hell is going on with it?

Read through this thoroughly, I just went through it too, maybe this'll help your tranny live a few more years...

Do you know how irritating it is when you take a corner and find that 2nd is too big for it, but because you don't have synchros, you can't downshift to 1st unless you want to stop? Realizing of course that perfect rev-matching is an state of zen-like bliss that the average driver might not ever achieve?

Subaruguy - What do you mean by "it happened today when downshifting?" Do you mean you felt the dog teeth grind? On my old Impreza that would sometimes happen but other times it would synchronize correctly.

Like Subyluvr2212 said, I'd suggest reading that thread and trying some new gear oil to revitalize your synchronizers. Also, you might want to start double clutching when you can, to prolong what life the synchros still have. Try to avoid shifting from 4th or 5th into 2nd; instead go through the intermediate gears. That'll help some too.

Subyluvr2212 - Most gearboxes are designed to never shift into first gear unless the car is stopped in any case. First is just too low. This is the case even with most new cars I've driven. On some cars you can, but you can feel that you're overworking the synchronizer.
