Perfect head for EJ22T

Post by William D. Robinson »

I was once an uneducated armchair proponent of putting EJ25 quad cam heads on the EJ22T, until Larry Witherspoon shared his experience on this bulletin board.

For those outside the US and those who don't know, The EJ22T USA Turbo engine is one of the most bulletproof closed-deck purpose-built engines ever built by Subaru, but they capped it with SOHC heads, with four valves per cylinder and hydraulic lifters (cam followers). A bottem end to die for capped by heads that don't breathe or rev as well as they could. So here is my question....What is the ultimate performance modification to our heads? Who does it? Exactly how does it differ from stock? How much does it cost?

I would have to say that the new US WRX heads would be the best I have
seen but they could be better with some some porting and polishing. We
installed a EJ22t short block in a WRX with an engine damaged due to
overboost and now it is hitting 8200 rpm and is still pulling. Most
others will float the valves at 7200-7300 including mine. I do have a
set of roller type rocker arms for my engine to try but do not expect
any results like the WRX heads.(I sure wish I could find a set of
them)AL(CO)

Do the new WRX heads have the same coolant passage line-ups as the EJ22T block?

O-ring the block? what do you mean?

Looks like I'll have to keep those heads in mind when the legacy decides it needs to be reworked ;)

Perfect head for EJ22T

Post by milehial2000 »

We have a tool that cuts a groove in the block around the cylinder and
then a small copper ring is placed in the groove. It is taller than
the groove is deep so that when the head is tightened down it
"crushes" the copper ring and gives a better seal. I would imagine
that these heads will be scarce for some time just because they work
well and the only way I see a pair being available on the used market
is an accident where the engine block is damaged. (could happen I am
watching)
