Has anyone out there have any experience with supercharged (rather
than turboed) 2.2L's.

I am interested in the supercharger vs. turbo for the immediate
throttle response (no turbo lag) and less heat in the engine
compartment.

My goal is significantly more pulling power at lower rpm. I am
seriously considering using the great 2.2T (for all its extra
strength, oiling and cooling designed for turbocharging) and a small
Eaton supercharger. At least one of the Subaru engine suppliers to
the airplane crowd is putting one on a 2.5L.

I know that Rimmer has done some work with this but they seem to be
pretty silent about it lately and I've never seen any info or a write-
up on one of their installations.

Appreciate any leads for feedback and experience.

would it be possible to actually mount a supercharger while keeping
the stock turbo? anyone have any ideas on pros vs. cons on that?

Appreciate any help you can give.

I have found aftermarket interest in performance tuning the 2.2L to
be hard to find. Lots of stuff for the WRX 2.0L or the previous
2.5RS.

Who are you referring to.....Rimmer or someone else?

We installed a supercharger on a SVX engine in a Legacy that came off
of a Mazda Millinia. It was a Whipple type rotary vane unit. It turned
out to be very loud and boost was hard to control and was eventually
removed. Some time ago the Rimmer engineering unit was supposed to be
made available to us and I can check on it if you would like. I saw
that Vortech had a belt drive supercharger that would fit the Subaru
in a magazine and talked with them and also talked to Gates Rubber in
Denver and they said they are making belts for it that would would
last a lot longer than the ordinary belts but I think it still comes
down to how do you control boost ?

I've just started working at a John Elway Subaru
Dealership in Denver and they have officially
announced that they are releasing a version of the
STX, a concept car from almost two years ago that they
are going to call the Subaru Baja. Basically it is
going to be like an Outback but in a truck style
(remember the Brat). The thing that relates to your
question about the supercharger is that it is going to
be the same 2.5L/4 cyl. engine as in the Outback but
super charged and intercooled to 230hp. I would
imagine that this same supercharger could be applied
to an older 2.2 engine but I'm not an expert and I
don't know the avab. on getting the actual parts but a
call to your local Subaru parts dealer might be able
to get some more info. www.subaru.com has a link to a
specs page on the Baja for anyone who might be
interested.

That was the original plan for the motor. Subaru put a design firm on hurts because they delayed the project. Now, there is going to be no supercharger, same ol' 2.5l 4 cylinder.

You can check out the baja at www.subarubaja.com Personally....it looks like a piece of plastic shit....just like the avalanche....me thinks GM got their mits on the design. If it didn't have the stupid plastic cladding up SOO HIGH.....it wouldn't be bad at all, plus if it was painted all one color, that'd be even better, and it wouldn't look so stupid. Just my thoughts.....I'll get off my soapbox.

The supercharger looks pretty nice and it looks like it would be a
setup where we could use an intercooler idea we have on the back shelf
for some reason and I think that reason might be that Rimmer never
supplied the supercharger to us. We have the manifold machined and the
two intercoolers, one for each head. They run just above the top of
the head and this looks like it would work well.

Josh-I have to agree. But, you know what`s most disturbing? The Avalanche won a truck-of-the-year award & most 18-35-year-olds like the design!!! Are we just old before our time??? (Ican say that @ 57.) I think you`re right about the GM influence as the Baja is a "baby" version of the same truck. Oh well, those of us with good taste will stick to our Legacies. Too bad about the supercharger, though. It would have been nice to be in the Subaru parts bin for further consideration. My .50 cents---ROD (STILL IN AZ.)

If they have all there prices in AUS then for us yanks thats not to shabby.. But at 3 grand isen't that price comapareable to most Turbo kits available?

I will say that the supercharger looks good on that 2.2 in the pics..and with a charger there is no lag, or spool up time, but i thought the rule was chargers are good imediate power ,and leave you hanging aroung 5000rpm as turbos kick in about 3,300rpm and carry you thru 8000rpm

I'm probobly really wrong.. But hey the price is right..

question about the supercharger is that it is going to
be the same 2.5L/4 cyl. engine as in the Outback but
super charged and intercooled to 230hp. I would
imagine that this same supercharger could be applied
to an older 2.2 engine but I'm not an expert and I
don't know the avab. on getting the actual parts but a
call to your local Subaru parts dealer might be able
to get some more info. www.subaru.com has a link to a
specs page on the Baja for anyone who might be
interested.

Forced Air has kits around that price. I'm not sure, but you are probably correct about the when the power kicks in and all that. I guess it sorta depends on what you want.....good low end grunt or top end screamer. You can get some really good turbos that don't have turbo lag too much though.

If they have all there prices in AUS then for us yanks thats not to shabby.. But at 3 grand isen't that price comapareable to most Turbo kits available?

I will say that the supercharger looks good on that 2.2 in the pics..and with a charger there is no lag, or spool up time, but i thought the rule was chargers are good imediate power ,and leave you hanging aroung 5000rpm as turbos kick in about 3,300rpm and carry you thru 8000rpm

I'm probobly really wrong.. But hey the price is right..

I am also in the middle of that age segment at 23.
The Avalanche has got to be the most disgusting THING
since the Asstek. I can't believe that they are
selling these monstrosities. Simply amazing. I
especially love the commercial where they're
"rallying" along and they switch the truck to stupid
open cab mode. Where the hell is all that dust/dirt
going to go after they open the cab. They don't show
them after that, but I would imagine it's all over the
inside of that thing. I guess I too should get off
the soapbox. It just amazes me that we, as Americans,
continue to produce such utter garbage. Why can't we
produce anything actually worth DRIVING.

How hard was it to do that on the SVX engine? Do you
know how much power you gained with the supercharger?

unit. It turned
out to be very loud and boost was hard to control and
was eventually
removed. Some time ago the Rimmer engineering unit was
supposed to be
made available to us and I can check on it if you
would like. I saw
that Vortech had a belt drive supercharger that would
fit the Subaru
in a magazine and talked with them and also talked to
Gates Rubber in
Denver and they said they are making belts for it that
would would
last a lot longer than the ordinary belts but I think
it still comes
down to how do you control boost ?

Liberty/Legacy 2.2L due to lack of demand.

It was pretty complicated everything had to be made by hand the mounts
,belt system, pulleys, super charger to throttle body ducting and the
intake. The whole works is probably for sale by the person that
thought of the idea he still owns the car. If it were me I would
inquire about the Vortech Supercharger they may have an application
that is close and the noise problem might not be something to contend
with as I believe that it is a centrifugal unit. This setup was
fast when it was working. I might be able to come up with a picture of
it if you would like.

I work in Sales. I am still going through all the
repetitive sales process junk this week at the Chevy
store up North. I will start at the store on
Aprapahoe just east of I-25 on next Monday. The
training is horrible as I am in it with a bunch of
people from the Ford and Chevy stores, two vehicles
that I personally dislike with a passion and I find
myself getting in a lot of arguments however. It's
funny though how I can always give reasons why a
Subaru is better than anything they can give me. Are
you considering putting a supercharger on your car
now? What is your current Subaru. I'm not real
experienced yet in mechanical work but I am constantly
trying to further my knowledge and if you are putting
a supercharger on I would love to give a hand if I
can. Even if it just means bringing a cooler of beer
or helping with anything else.
