Wierd washer thingy...

Post by Brian White »

OK, here's a stumper. I just replaced my alternator
and am now questioning the placement of one particular
item. There is a long bolt that attaches the
alternator on the right side (if you're standing in
front of the car). This bolt is basically the pivot
point for the tensioning adjustment on that accessory
belt. This bolt has a washer and also connects the
little black covers for the belts and whatnot. It
also has another light silver washer type thing that
has a large hole(seemingly useless) and a small piece
of metal that bends 90 degrees, like a little finger
or flange.

I was just wondering about the positioning of this
Washer thing because it's not mentioned in the Haynes
manual that I have. First of all, I don't know if the
flange thing is supposed to face the front of the car
or the back or even be on the top or bottom. Second
of all, what purpose does this washer thing serve? I
can't figure out why it's even there, but I imagine it
serves some purpose, perhaps to keep the accessory
belt covers in place. I would really appreciate some
help on this one as I don't want to have to take my
alternator apart later on down the road because I made
a mistake now. If you need a better description, let
me know and I'll try to provide additional
information, or even a picture for that matter. Sorry
for the long winded email, but I couldn't get the
question across any better. Thanks everyone, you've
been most informative.

-Brian

So nobody out there can even just check their engine
compartment and let me know. Like I said, I would
REALLY appreciate the help. I don't want to have to
take apart the whole alternator assembly just to
change this washer thing. Help please! Thanks in
advance.

Wierd washer thingy...

Sorry Brian I sent this earlier and it got lost evidently. I wasn't
real sure of what you were talking about but going by my engine there
is the long bolt that go's through the "ears" of the alternator. Going
from the front there is a small washer than a large washer than the
bracket that holds the sheilds for the belts and after going through
the "ears" it screws into a bracket that sounds like what you
described as being bent at a 90 degree angle, this goes on last and
the bent portion faces fowards and prevents the nut that is welded to
it from turning. This may not be 100% accurate as my car is a bit of a
hybrid ("95 Imprezza coupe -"94 Turbo motor) but it works.

Wierd washer thingy...

Post by Josh Colombo »

Brian,

I'm not exactly sure what you're talkin about. I do however have some pics of the front part of the engine, when I was adding my underdrive pulley. I have pics that should help, if you can point out what it is on the pics, maybe I can help. They're on my site http://www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/subaru.html In the image gallery/My Legacy, and engine.

Lemme know if that helps...

Josh

Wierd washer thingy...

Post by milehial2000 »

Hi Brian, I had checked my alt. but really didn't understand what you
were refering to. On the long bolt that provides a "pivot point" on my
alternator from front to rear there is a small washer than a large
thick washer then the bracket that holds the sheilds for the belts
then it goes through the alternator housing "ears" and at the very
back it has what I think you were refering to as a piece of metal that
was bent at 90 degrees. This goes on with the bent portion facing
forward and the bent part prevents the nut welded to it from turning.
My car is sort of a Hybrid ('95 Imprezza coupe-'94 turbo motor)so this
may not be 100% accurate but it works.
