WHIRRRLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Post by N1446 »

Would a shrill-whirrllling sound be caused by a bad axel , and vibrate the shifter also ? - i ve reset the boot to its normal shape like an accordian and when i park and check the boot it looks like this > :? i know i pinched the boot causing the grease leak when removing the motor , the downpipe snaged it on the way out , with the new motor in , now while driviing i have this Metallic-like WHIRRRRLLLLllllll - noise comming from the under carrage / front engine - it seems it is not related to the clutch as i first though as the noise is constant no matter how i play with the clutch , the clutch works fine regardless of the sound - there is no noise when the car is parked and idle - has anyon :x e have expreience with this shrill-WHIIRLLLLLLL noise and it is really LOUD after 5 minutes of rolling around Image

Even if this wasn't the cause of the noise, you should still get a new axle.

Just look at that thing......... Wow.

Ummm dude. The only possible way that axle could end up looking like that after making the boot straight is if the axle shaft and cv joint are moving at different speeds! In other words that cv HAS to be completely broken,if you had a 2wd car the car would not move at all!

Yeah man, you're probably driving on just the rear wheels now.

That's terrible. I wouldn't drive that car like that.

Here's what I want you to do N1446.

Find out where that axle came from. Is it aftermarket, rebuilt, OEM, original? Has the boot ever been replaced?

Now, whoever made that axle, call them up. Ask them where they get their boots from.

Then, let me know what you come up with.

Whoever makes those boots...

... will receive a substantial order from me as I reboot every joint on every axle on every car I own .

If that boot can stand up to that, then it will simply scoff at any road debris that is thrown at it.

As the others have said, replace that now. Don't worry about anything else until that is fixed.

Best thread of the day. Period. :smt041

I'm just as amazed as everyone else that your boot is still somewhat intact. I'm also surprised that you didn't feel anything beyond what you posted.

Oh wow you stripped the splines?!? i figure you just blew the innards up...hmm.So the sound hasnt changed?

Did you put on a new axle assembly or just stuff a new shaft into the buggered splines? :-D

Im wondering if you somehow did the same thing to the splines that come out the tranny?

Also...how have i not done this myself doing full throttle clutch dumps? :smt009

i pick'd the whole axle for 25 $ used off the 93 ls i wrecked back in february , the splines off the trans are AOK on the ss
-
the noise still remains , i drove it 20 klms with no exhaust headers - moved this weekend - and got a good feel for the noise - i m putting money on the bearings , 8 bucks for the pilot and 60 for the release from NAPA - though now when i drive i get that AWD feeling again

this is a stretch though is it possible i have the incorrect engine mounts on the motor in the SS , they re originally on the 98 EJ25D ->BK chassi<- will this cause the transmission to sit incorrectly when all is bolted down ?

Wait, the splines in the picture go into what?

You still need to show us what is under that boot!
