No coolant loss, so it doesn't appear to be a head gasket.

Ok, just when I thought the problem was licked, go for a longer drive and it comes back. Looks like either the radiator or water pump then. :?

that's funny. i was gonna say check that first before putting a whole radiator in there. guess i forgot. doesn't it feel good when you finally figure out what the problem is and fix it? No sweat. I had totally forgotten about the cap myself, and it was a fluke that I checked it. And yes, it ...

sorry we posted at tthe same time, I wasnt trying to correct you or anything :) Yeah that stant cap couldve been the reason why it failed so early. A Subaru OEM cap should last a long time. Much longer than 10k :) LOL, yeah, I realized we posted at the same time. It was still on the brain, so I jus...

The cap releases pressure when the water boils. When the water boils, it becomes a gas, and gases take up more space than liquids. This increases the pressure in the system to higher than the cap rating, which opens the cap allowing the gas to escape and cool (condense) in the coolant tank (reservoi...

It was a standard Stant 11227 cap, which is their "OEM" replacement. I have no idea what came on the car originally, but even the dealer back East carried the Stant caps. Now as far as how a failed radiator cap can cause overheating at low speeds, that might best be answered by someone els...

Lesson learned: check the simple stuff first. I had the car sitting idling in my driveway with the A/C on, and the temp never raised a bit. Drove around the block, temp went up. :?: So when I got back to the house, I shut the car off and pop the radiator cap: no pressure. Not even a small amount, wh...

Sounds reasonable enough. Especially since I don't truly know the condition of the radiator after the monkeys at the old shop did the engine change. Did I mention that these same monkeys were the CAUSE of the engine change? grumble grumble grumble

Ok, the fans both run with the A/C on. The coolant looked good coming out, and seems to flow well when the cap is off while the car is running. Radiator is the original. Water pump was changed when the engine was installed, so it has about 35k on it now. The temp never gets over the half way mark wh...

temp rise with A/C on

Ok, seems like my car wants to have issues. Whenever I run the A/C the temp rises, and approaches redline. I'm in Tucson, AZ and this generally happens when I'm stuck in traffic. 105 degrees today, sitting in trafic, turn the A/C on and the temp starts climbing. Any thoughts? It doesn't overheat, bu...

Thanks Josh. Sounds like something I'll let the local shop take care of. Fortunately this shop not only specializes in Subarus, but the owner loves the cars and has some very competent techs! And here I was worried that there wouldn't be any good Subie shops in AZ!

Duty Solenoid B?

I pulled a code 12 from the TCU on my '90 Legacy, and that's a fault with Duty Solenoid B. Anyone know where this solenoid lives on the tranny, and how hard it is to replace?

ok, so all in all the EJ22T is a better swap than for a larger displacement engine as far as power goes. But the EJ25 is a direct drop in and go with no exhaust or wiring changes. Hmmm, gonna have to keep my eyes open. Ann Arbor is a good distance away from Tucson, and I'm not in a position that I c...

what will fit in place of an EJ22?

Ok, the resealed engine in my car has some life left in it, but I'm trying to plan ahead, and would enjoy more power as well. I can get away with an engine swap legally as long as the replacement is from the same model year or newer and all emissions equipment is functional. The turbo engines sound ...

Ok, I've been out of the loop for awhile, and a quick scan didn't bring up any other posts on the subject, so I've gotta ask: What info does decoding the transmission ID give? The tranny in my car has over 200,000 miles on it, and I'm thinking of replacing it when I swap out engines (there's a quest...

Arizona laws?

I'm taking the plunge and moving from the hills of WV to the desert of AZ. I have no emissions checks here in WV, and just wondering how tough AZ is. At the moment, all I've got is a K&N Filter and MRT complete exhaust system. Supposed to be at least 49 state legal, so I shouldn't have reasons t...

From looking at it, the 92-94 side marker lights have a different shape than the 90-91s. It would likely involve a fender swap to work.

Balljoints replacement

How difficult is it to replace a front balljoint? I just replaced the struts and mounts on my car, and now I find that the front right balljoint is shot. Ugh!! I guess throwing my car through the turns takes its toll!

My car makes a definite clunk at slow speeds when turning at slow speed on the right. I have a badly worn upper strut mount on the right front, which I didn't find until I had the car up on a lift. The nut is tight, but the strut shakes in the mount. I also got a vibration during braking. New struts...
