When Im at a dead stop, which is over 100+ times a day, I would like to be able to just put in drive and go. The hit the brake switchy thing has been acting up so I sometimes have to press the brake several times and jiggle the shift button. The big deal is its a pain in the ass. Any idea where the ...

Can I remove the trans brake lock thingy?

I have a 91 Legacy L auto, I am constantly stopping, parking, driving, stopping, parking, driving etc.... The trans lock thing that unlocks when the brake is pressed is a major pain. Is there a way to bypass this?

Could have been, I did strap a loose one down, but man, that noise was coming directly under that fly wheel. Maybe the belt was too tight or too loose? I wont question it, glad the noise is gone (knock on wood)

I took the belt off to check on the pulley and it is on there tight. Nothing I can wiggle or spin by hand or even a socket. However, after I put the belt back on and patched a hole in the exhaust which was near the cat where the two pipes join, the noise has ceased to exist. Just one of those things...

Maybe its not called a harmonic balancer, but it is the pulley to the bottom of the alternator at the center of the engine. It does wobble at idle and straightens out at higher rpms..

Just got back from the garage, I was lucky enough to get in. According to the mechanic, its the harmonic balancer thats off kilter making the flywheel chirp.
Opinions?

I had time to inspect it further, definately not water pump or pulleys. The noise is directly above the control arm (the bar that connects the two front tires) and is coming from the flywheel. Is it bad to physically see the flywheel? I thought that supposed to be covered.... Could this squeaking or...

It definately sounds like a water pump going bad, but it just doesnt sound like where its coming from. I suppose it could be sound reflecting.

"Could be something in the bellhousing making contact w/ the flexplate. Easy way to check.. "

Without taking the tranny out?

squeaking driving me nuts

91 Legacy L, auto, 2.2 Its developed an off and on problem with squeaking somewhere at the bottom of the engine. The squeak is much like the squeak from a bad power steering pump when the bearings start to go bad. It is in revolution with the engine. Only happens at idle or stopped in drive. Of cour...

woops, not tranny fluid

I thought it was tranny fluid leaking but I was checking the diff fluid, doh! Which is just clean oil looking almost yellow. Anyways, upon further inspection, the leak is coming from the valve covers dripping right on the exhaust pipe coming down. This looks like a fairly easy job, is there anything...

Help with squeeking and smoke

I posted here before with my 4wd not working and was helped tremendously with bypassing the computer with a switch. Still works like a charm. Hoping for help with a new issue. I have a 1991 Legacy L, automatic which has recently begun to smoke coming from somewhere under the hood. I can see it comin...

I bought myself a car jack for christmas and got the car up on blocks. I figured if it was a mechanical issue there'd be some noise or movement somewhere but got absolutely nothing but the front tires. I ended up putting a switch to bypass the puter as suggested and voila! I tried to get myself stuc...

Is it possible to find out if its more a mechanical failure by putting it up on blocks and see if all 4 tires spin? Or does it need actual "slippage" in the front to engage the rears?
Id hate to put the switch in and it not do anything.....

Its got over 250,000 miles, tires are decent enough. Ive driven on worse tires in worse conditions. Definately worth changing the fluid which I hope to do this weekend. Were expecting a big snow storm Sunday. Im guessing theres a tranny filter in there too. The speedo cable will be next and hope its...

sorry, its an automatic. I was hoping its supposed to drive better in the snow, and hopefully not a big problem...... This may be a related problem. I get a nice kick going into second gear and than a little slide into 3rd. It maybe the speedo cable is a little off, takes a few seconds to catch up t...

Question about 4WD

I have a 91 Legacy, says all time 4WD on the dash. We just had our first big dump of snow here in Maine and I was expecting it to drive a bit better. I have a slight incline in the driveway and it felt like any front wheel drive car with the tires slipping in the snow. Didnt notice the rear wheels a...

I put in new spark plugs, wires, oil filter and a canister sensor from the junk yard. There was almost double the amount of oil that was supposed to be in there  . im guessing that was the cause of the chugging since it runs like a champ now. However still getting codes 22 and 35 but if it ru...

It idles fine, just when I tap the gas it putters and jerks for a bit til the rpm gets higher. If I step on it, it will chug and putter for a bit but normal 30 - 40mph on a straight road is fine. I plan on giving it a nice cleaning and tune up this weekend. Since it seems the two sensors arent "...

rough idle, new to subaru, codes 22 and 35

Great site ; ) Learned alot in just a few reads. Just bought a 91 AWD Legacy, plain one, nothing fancy, for 250.00. Good deal eh? Mechanic said all it need to pass inspection was new brakes and rotors which I did this weekend. (however, a snapped bolt in the caliper took an entire Sunday to tap out ...
