Good Battery, dead car, it's a mystery.
So here's what I've got going. Batter voltage: 12.35 volts Fuses: All checked good (under hood and in drivers kick panel) Normal Status: Dead. Like someone simply removed the battery. Battery negative has ground, starter has 12 volts to it. I attempted to hot-wire it by putting voltage to the igniti...

Bone stock engine. I've never had it over maybe 3500 RPM in 5th gear. Freaky!

Lost 5th Gear
Car: 1991 Legacy LS 5-speed Miles: 251k Mods: Aftermarket Muffler Drove it to a friends house tonight and just before I got there it was making a slipping/crunching noise in 5th gear at anything over 1/2 throttle starting at around 1500 RPM. Tried the same thing in 4th, no problem. Parked the car. G...

Well, I was at my local Subaru service shop (Smart Service - far and away the best in the area), and they had a trashed steering rack out of a legacy. Instead of them having it hauled off to scrap, I got to take it home for free. Now I have the legacy rack to measure off of! Even better, they told m...

I have watched the injector pulse width and with my auto rolling at anything above 40km/h in 3rd the injectors go from the usual pulse of 2 range to 0.50-1 range. Really uses little little gas I am pretty sure on a restart it goes to 3-4 yet momentarily. If I coast everywhere with a automatic in 3r...

Whether it fits or not, it might be difficult finding a Loyale with a manual rack unless you want to buy a new one. I remember when I had my much lighter '83/84 GLs (both manual, both fine without power), most of the other GLs I saw in the junk yards (back when you could still find them) were power...

you do realize that the car cuts of the injectors when you're coasting in gear with the car on, right? and that you're probably using more fuel restarting the car. and that it's incredibly unsafe. I have to disagree on all counts. DFCO (Deceleration Fuel Cut Off) only turns off the injectors under ...

I've done a bit more research and found that some of the Subaru Loyals came with manual steering. Does anyone know if it would be possible to swap one of those into a Legacy? I know people have put plenty of EJ22's into those cars, so I've got the info I need for the PS delete on the engine itself (...

Manual Steering Legacy
So I've noticed that my Legacy power steering pump doesn't seem happy with my hypermiling habits. i.e. coasting with the engine turned off. After a few days of consistent hypermiling, the power steering pump will start to have a shudder in it as I turn across having the wheels pointing straight ahea...

Probably the best way to measure that is to buy some time on the Dyno, they can usually measure BSFC. Keep in mind though, that's usually WOT BSFC, which is very different than say cruise BSFC. If you want to calculate BSFC at say 60 mph on level ground, you can perform coast-down tests to determine...

It's got a newish O2 sensor and recent oil change. It doesn't do it every time, just now and then. But when it happens, it's ONLY on a cold start. Is the Coolant Temp sensor tied to the temp gauge? Because according to the gauge it's warming up as I would expect. Sometimes it'll also get stuck on a ...

Odd Starting Problem
My 1994 Legacy Mi wagon has 207k on it and has been remarkably reliable for the entire time I've owned it. Recently, it's started acting strange on cold start though. It will start fine, then idle down to almost nothing and sound like it's going to die. Feeding it throttle causes it to pop and stumb...

This has been beat to death over on the gassavers.org forum. The verdict: don't do it unless you want less power, rough running, and likely lower mpg. In order to get any hope of improving fuel economy you'd have to deactivate the valves, as well as the injector and sparkplug ala Hemi w/cylinder dea...

High Compression Build
Hello Folks, I'm new to the forum but not new to Subies or mechanics. I'm investigating the idea of building a custom 1990-1994 Legacy wagon and have decided I want to build a high-compression experimental engine. (I'm an engineer as well as a gearhead). My question is this: What is the highest comp...
